Remedied by substitution after an hour but, strangely, it made little difference to play.

But it did make a difference to the result which is all that matters at the end of the day

Scoring chances from open play were hard to come by before the substitution. And, despite the overwhelming possession, the play remained ineffective in producing scoring chances after the substitution.

Granted, it did produce several corners. Holt is a force at corners – especially when the opposing centre half has been sent off. Wigan forced five corners in succession, scoring from the fifth.

The result may be all that mattered to you today. But Wigan will have to find a way to create chances from open play, and it will be harder to create them against teams with eleven men.

But we got three hard-earned points today. Well done! Now we’ve got a very demanding run of seven games in three weeks to get through. It could well determine what we achieve this season.

Oh dear, foot…mouth….great poachers goal from the big man. Is there any other players that you are not looking forward to them returning? We may be on to a good winning formula here. ;)

Yes, it’s an excellent tactic to play against a team with only ten men.

However, you got it wrong once again – Holt didn’t score. But he is a threat at corners and free kicks, especially when the opposing centre half has been sent off.

It’s open play that I’m worried about. Even with overwhelming possession against ten men, Wigan found it difficult to create chances from open play, whether or not Holt was on the field.

But there is something I’m looking forward to – a well-reasoned post from you. You know you can do it.[/quote]

All right then, it was awarded as an own goal, but it wouldn’t have gone in only for Holt’s presence so that will do for me.

You seem to be worrying about everything and anything, open play is the latest issue. I suggest you take a break from football and this board, pull yourself together, have a go at those colouring books you got for your birthday, have a nice rest and come back refreshed and positive, early in the new year. Who knows we may be in the top 6 by then and Everton in the bottom half of the table. B)

And perhaps you will have got over Roberto too.

It didn’t look as if Coyle was enjoying the way they were playing either. He was jumping up and down on the touch line and shouting and waving at them to try harder.

He threw his arms in the air in exasperation whenever they lost the ball, which was quite often. When things got too much for him, he stamped on a water bottle and kicked one away. You can get into trouble doing that.

But the players were trying. They don’t need to try harder, they need someone to channel their efforts in a clear direction. I think you’re right. A break from football would do Coyle good too.

Quite frankly I dont care if it goes in off someones bell end as long as it goes in and another thing for years in the prem we were moaning about not scoreing from set pieces now we are scoring were frigging moaning we cant score from open play ffs

        #122070

But I’m not complaining that we scored from set pieces! I’m just trying to look ahead. I’m concerned that if we find it difficult to create chances, then we will continue to find it difficult to score goals.

We were fortunate on Sunday. Blackburn had their centre-half sent off and we had Holt sitting on the sub’s bench and ready to come on and threaten them at corners. Things won’t always be so convenient.

We’ve scored important late and last minute goals against Doncaster, Middlesbrough, Ipswich, Maribor and Blackburn. The danger is that one day we’re going to run out of time before we score.

Have you not been paying attention WGTB ?
That was last season, when Bobby believed we had “to grow into the game” and only brought his subs on with 10 minutes to go. This my friend is a different Latics.

        That may be true.

But Blackburn had their centre half sent off after 30 minutes. Coyle waited until the 57th minute before bringing Holt on as a substitute.

Wigan scored the equalizer after 69 minutes, and the winner in injury time. That is leaving it rather late.

They can’t rely on scoring last minute goals game after game. If they can’t create more clear chances, they are going to be caught out sooner or later.

Man Utd have always done alright out of nicking late goals !

Except, of course, when they didn’t score one.

You are correct we will not always be able to score a late goal to win a game.

But we are hardly relying on a late goal. If we are relying on a late goal, its like suggesting that there is a plan to not score until added time.

I think it shows a strength of character within the team to just keep going, keep playing and pushing on.
I suggest it is the opposition that relaxes once the 4th official raises his board, thinking that the point is safe with the scores level.

The result is a late winner – long may it continue !!!

It’s about time we were on the happy side of late goals. I used to have my eyes shut during added on time.

Wouldn’t you be more comfortable if we were two goals up before we got to the last few minutes?

We seem to be finding it difficult to create chances and to take them.

The exception was Maribor, of course, when we found it easy to create chances, and just as easy to miss them.

Man Utd didn’t do too well today – they conceded a late goal.

We still can’t create chances from open play. We didn’t even threaten from set pieces until Holt and Fortune came on. A late goal didn’t save us this time and we came away with nothing.
