“I’ve spent a lifetime in Sports.

As a player (Rugby, Soccer, Tennis, Track and Field, Table-Tennis), a Coach (Rugby) and Administrator (New Zealand All Blacks, USA Rugby, New Zealand Soccer, North Harbour Rugby, Team New Zealand Yachting).

Five years ago I completed my second four year term as Chairman of USA Rugby, and in line with Governance terms, stepped down. I decided to take a break after 30 years non-stop in the admin roles mentioned above – and just enjoy being an All Black and Manchester City Fan. Now I’m back!!

This week we’ll be announcing that I’ve joined the Board of Wigan Athletic Football Club in The Championship, England’s second tier where three clubs are promoted each year into the Premiership.

Wigan (The Latics) were founded 87 years ago in 1932. They spent eight years in the Premier League – from 2005 – 2013, and won the 2012-13 FA Cup Final beating my beloved Manchester City 1/0 at Wembley. (The Latics knocked City out of the Cup again (in 2014) and again(!) in 2018.) I forgive them. They’re a good grass-roots working class Lancashire team, less than 40 miles away from my home town of Lancaster.

On November 2 2018, International Entertainment Corporation (IEC) Hong Kong bought the Club, stadium and training facilities.

The new Board had its inaugural meeting last week, under Darren Royle’s Executive Chairmanship. Darren’s Dad – Joe, ex Man City player/manager, and Everton/England legend, is on the Board alongside CEO Jonathan Jackson, IEC rep Thomas Chan and yours truly.

We’ve started by developing, with the Club’s leadership team, a new Purpose on a Page for the Club.

Our Dream: To bring European Football to Wigan.
Our Focus: To win Football matches.
    Our Spirit: We Are Wigan.

We are currently 19th in the Championship. A league of 24 teams where three are relegated each year.

Eight games to go this season.

We must win at least two.

    A lot to do.

    Watch this space.”

Former CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi.

Seriously ?, did you £take the time to look at our League position.

Our Focus: To win Football matches.
Yep, that helps, if we can win more than we lose we might just make that European target £50 million might help as well

      Our Spirit: We Are Wigan.

Well thought of, do you actually get paid a bonus for that

They could have put any worries about relegation to bed had they the balls to change things. Instead they have been as visual as Lord Lucan riding Shergar and as vocal as Sooty. European Football on which planet.

Imagine if Whelan walked in and said “In 10 years I just hope we’re still in the football league”

Massive difference between Uncle Dave taking over and these men Stu. We were at rock bottom when Mr Whelan took over and we saw immediate progress. Since this lot have been here we have gone backwards. How can he say the dream is European football when they have done jack shit to halt our current plight.

Its all too easy to say “the dream is” my dream is to drive my Bugatti Veyron down to Monte Carlo and find myself in a hotel room with Dua Lipa and Shakira. From their showing up to now my dream has the more chance of coming true. COYL

None of us have any idea what is going on behind the scenes and TBH that is how it should be. I think we have been spoiled a little really with the way Uncle Dave used to talk to the press.

He was honest tho egg and when he needed to be ruthless. He would have never let this season happen without at least some effort to halt the slide. And I would much rather them say what the immediate plan is instead of dreaming of European football. Next season is our priority be it Championship or League One. Tell us what they intend to implement and change give us a belief in IEC. Latics fans are the best they are not stupid or have ridiculous expectations we know our clubs limits. Just be up front with us nothing more.

They have told us that. The aim is to invest heavily in our youth system so that we can start to produce our own players (which in turn we will probably sell for big profits) and the ultimate plan is to be back in the premier league. How they achieve that is their business.

Whelan was great of course he was, but he was a bit too happy with the trigger finger at times. The side that Benson had would have pissed that league under Mathias for example, and it wasn’t until Jewell (who would have been sacked in his first season normally) that he finally gave a manager time and look what happened.

We need to stay up this season one way or another and then hopefully we will have a more attractive budget for Cook to work with next season.

TBF nuneaton, how many scoffed at DW remark about premier league football within 10 years, & I bet most who scoffed were supporters of WAFC. It took nearly 3 years under DW’s stewardship before rewards began to come our way. Things dont happen overnight.

Nobody laughed more than me Runc but things especially off the field started to happen very quickly so we believed in him from the off. To be fair IEC have big boots to fill we will never see an owner like Dave again but they have to gain trust. As for the kids, we have already produced quite a few but under Cookie there is little chance of them making the step up. The real disappointment up to now is that we should have easily been good enough this season to stay up instead we are heading for yet another relegation from the Championship.
