I hate to put a dampener on this weekends celebrations but I got the distinct feeling that Bobby will be off to pastures new sooner than I thought (I had hoped for at least one more year).

Did anyone see the interview last night on BBC NW at around 18:50?

When pressed on whether he would move on he refused to commit (which I can understand) but his final comment worried me greatly. He basically siad that they had had a three year plan and he had achieved what they set out to do.

To me the interview said to interested parties – “I am available.”

Just because he’s achieved one 3 year plan, doesn’t mean he hasn’t got another.

Hope you’re right – maybe i am paranoid but someone else came in this morning (not a Latics fan) and asked me whether i had seen the interview. His interpretation of the interview was the same as mine.

At the turn of the year I’d have been glad to see him go, but now I’m intrigued as to where we can go from here.

I think a lot depends on who goes out and who comes in and maybe that’s a reason for our slow starts (new players settling in to the club and to Bob’s tactics) but we’ve shown in the last two months that we certainly have the platform.

Im the same view what if he blazes away with 6 wins out of eight at the start of next year?
The guy is still learning and he has a chairman who has given him time to do this.
Walk away now and he may never know what he could have really acheived with his current crop of players.
Not sure a mini season of 8 games is going to land him a top job though.

He wont go anywhere yet .. these tossers who interview and throw in the awkward questions need to back off..
Martinez is entitled to chill out and think about his future and unless a top top job comes along he will stay . Hes worked hard and he isnt stupid. A lot of other Chairman would have sacked him after the 8 striaght defeats but Whelan stuck with him and well done for that.
I know that most fans wanted Martinez gone at some stage in the last two years but now look.. we all love him !!

I hate to be pedantic but since February we have lost 3 games out of 14. If we get a result on Sunday that will make it 15. That makes it just under 40% of the season which in my mind makes it a chunk of a season rather than a mini season.

I have never waivered in my love for him (I think Mrs Do has been expecting me coming out of the closet) which is why I am concerned about losing him now. I do acknowledge that I have pessimistic tendancies. I also see that the caption from Dave Whelan saying he would have no problem sacking him was taken out of context and suggested that there was a fall out in March when in fact he was saying he had his full backing, and indeed there may have been some clever editing of the interview but it did raise alarm bells with me.

Fair point but even so he is still learning his trade as a manager and coach and the majority of this season (23 games)has been appalling and questions need asking as to why they started so poorly given that most of the current squad were at the club back in august last year.
I agree totally how great it is to survive and i am very proud but he is no way ready to take a big job.
Next season(if he stays) could be the making of him though and im sure we will all expect much more from him and the team.

bobs always banging on about the young players not being ready to leave for a big club ( moses ) so he will know when its right to leave and we will wish him all the best when he does.

Don’t get me wrong Vince , I totally agree with you he is still learning the trade – he has afterall still had just three years as a top level manager. I would hate to see him go now to a massive club where they will demand instant success and he could well end up just another managerial casualty.

I’ve said before we could be on the verge of something special here and I’m sure he will want to see just what we can achieve. I honestly believe he’ll be here for at least another year regardless of who comes knocking.

I hope he stays but the entire backroom staff need to sit down and get the bit between the teeth earlier in the season and not prance round like they have won the champions league because they stayed up.They have avoided relegation AGAIN and it is hardly celebratory stuff when you look at it in the cold light of day.I think the bad start was caused by too much dwelling on the heroics of West ham and Stoke and that casual celebratory atmosphere carried on well into this season hence the dreadful start.
Caldwell really impressed me on sky on monday when he played down the survival with a face that suggested rank disappointment rather than celebration.
It is now time to stop treading water and move the club forward which surely Dave Whelan can see the result of the winning team of recent weeks is a full house of home supporters this sunday. It wont take much money other than securing the staff at the club and giving him a realistic budget for prudent transfer dealing that Martinez seems to be very good at.
This surely would be much rather than daft spending on mediocre players past their sell by date that we have seen in the past.
If they start next season as they finished this one then surely we are looking at bigger crowds and cup runs and a more enjoyable season than the one we have just had.
The bar has been raised in recent weeks so i reckon he should stay for one more year at least to see what happens.
