Well done to Bobby for doing this, excellent idea. Not only do managers not tend to do this sort of thing, but it must have been a lot harder for Martinez to do than it would Bruce at this time last year when we were dreaming of Europe. Of course things aren’t right at the mo and I’m sure Martinez didnt expect all the questions to be positive and not be critical of him, so he deserves great credit and I think it shows the class and honesty of the man.
6 March 2010 at 1:50 am #25373Shame it couldn’t have been an open fans forum.
Mmmmmmm he did that in november![/quote]
Why didn’t he do it now?Because a lot’s changed since the last one maybe?
6 March 2010 at 1:51 am #253744-5-1 ? i never mentioned it? you brought that little(big) matter up jason not me?(its not working!) and we do not have the players to make it work. so jason you can carry on brushing what matters under the old proverbial carpet as rome burns down to the ground all you like and tow the party line all you like until the cows come home. it does not wash with me any more pal and its as simple as that!

Does it have to be either, or?6 March 2010 at 12:02 pm #25423I don’t know what some people want.
I think some wanted him hung, drawn, and quartered.
I REALLY think they need to pack in going and give up if it gets to them that much.
6 March 2010 at 2:31 pm #25427I’ve not posted on CL for years, but registered especially to defend my pie question. Jay has already done that, but whilst I’m here I thought I’d add weight to what he and Migs have already said.
The way I see it, the three questions that everyone seems to want answering predominately boil down to these things:
>Why does Bobby persist with the style of play that he does?
>Why isn’t that style of play working?
>Why does he persist with certain players?
>Why aren’t those players as successful as he thinks they should be?
>Why does he persist with positive messages in post match interviews (etc) when things aren’t going too well?None of us might have asked those questions (especially in that way) but in essence we didn’t need to because he answered them anyway. There are anynumber of reasons why no one pushed or questioned his answers, mainly for me it was:
>His answers confirmed what I thought already
>I believed him, and
>more importantly, it was clear that he believed himselfYou can be as cynical as you want about Thursday, but there was no bullsh*t involved from anyone involved, especially Bobby.
6 March 2010 at 4:58 pm #25447‘If you look at McCarthy, Moses, Hugo and Marcelo, we have as good a strike force as anybody especially at home.’….
What is that sentence? First thing first… McCarthy isn’t a striker, Moses hardly plays, Marcelo has done nothing and Hugo has’t scored for a while. So the strike force that is ‘as good as anybody’ .. involves a midfielder, somebody playing midfield, somebody hardly playing and somebody who hasn’t scored.
I would like to have the claim of our great partnership justified please.6 March 2010 at 7:14 pm #25508’If you look at McCarthy, Moses, Hugo and Marcelo, we have as good a strike force as anybody especially at home.’….What is that sentence? I’ll try to help you out, James. Bless! He didn’t say that McCarthy was a striker did he? He said he is part of the strike force. Tellingly, he didn’t say that Diame and Thomas were.
Too many people (not necessarily you, James) are too happy to slag off a system without even understanding how it is meant to be played.
8 March 2010 at 2:33 am #25636The main concern is Martinez does not understand how it is to be played. If he did he would ensure it happened and not serve up the rubbish we do.
8 March 2010 at 1:07 pm #25655Just in response to the responses to my posts can I just say that at no point did i intend to have a go at the interview technique or questions put to Bobby.
Actually i don’t think I have (without reading my posts again) but if it came over that way then it wasn’t meant toMy gripes, if you can call em that, are a) with the Bobby’s responses/statements/answers some of which quite frankly come across as confirming my own personal view that he is out of his depth in the top flight at this point in his career & b) with the impression that I got (& not saying that’s the way it is – just that’s the way I read it) that the interview has been presented to us as “Well Bobby said it, so therefore its true”
I didn’t expect those putting the questions to him to tear him to shreds or pick apart his answers at the interview but I get the impression, and someone who was there seemed to hint at it in a comment they made, that because its hoped these become a monthly thing no-one wanted to do anything that might get on his goat
To be honest this feeling is strengthened again by the latest lead feature from, I assume, JayT about the booing.
I completely agree with the general point of the article that it doesn’t help during matches but then there is another “Bobby said” moment with this comment:
“As Bobby said, we are one result away from having a great team; it needs that result to let them kick on and get a string of results together”
If anyone truly believes that then, IMO, they are completely deluded. We look awful & it looks worse game by game at the moment. We’ve also had this comment before every victory this season & after its been a case of “its come together now” & then we get another string of sub-standard performances
But I guess Bobby said it so it must be true ;)8 March 2010 at 1:23 pm #25664Well, Premiership or Championship……I’ll still be watching, so I’ve stopped worrying, to be honest. Whatever happens, happens.
I can’t for the life of me think of a more suitable replacement for Roberto, and in him we have a genuine guy who cares about the club. I think when Jewell took over he said it needed “Major surgery”. I think it’s the same now. Players have to be got shut of, and this can’t be done overnight. Her Majesty did us a favour with Marlon King, but other players such as Koumaz, Bouauzan, De Ridder, Kapo, etc, are a different kettle of fish. There must be about £100,000 a week in wages between them 4 players, and with nothing in return for it. Criminal. Task is to get shut of them and use that money on wages for better players. I support Roberto’s theory of needing 3 transfer windows. However, I do think that if by Sept/October of next season, if there isn’t a marked improvement, then questions need be asked. Bare in mind that with his protracted appointment, he missed a lot of opportunity last summer.
I also think that you could bring anybody in now to replace him, and it wouldn’t make any difference. I’m afraid our Premier League status is as much in the hands of the other strugglers, as it is our own. Simply because we have to play Bolton, Burnley, Portsmouth and Hull. If we go down, it’s because we’ll deserve to.
