I see the 6 Nations is introducing bonus points for next year’s event. Typically for Rugby Union it’s complicated.
Now whilst I would not use RU as any benchmark for sporting development, I’ve long felt a bonus point system could work well in football.
Keep it simple. A bonus point for scoring 3 goals, regardless of the end result. For me, if a team scores 3 goals but loses 4-3 (eg Liverpool v Newcastle April 1996) they deserve something from the game. It would encourage attacking play as teams at 2-0 up still have the incentive to go forward and conversely encourages defence as well ie dont give up at 0-2…
Simple to say “if it’s not broke dont fix it” but things have changed before ie 3 points for a win, Football League switching to goals scored in 1996 (Wigan cannot thank you enough Mr Hill   ).
