27 August 2009 at 6:03 pm #7005Filthy old man escapes again.
27 August 2009 at 10:34 pm #7039If it weren’t for him we be in the same shoes as Chester City.
Filthy old man escapes again.27 August 2009 at 10:43 pm #7042Wouldnt be lied to and conned.
27 August 2009 at 10:54 pm #7046Wouldnt be lied to and conned.Seriously, go and watch Chester then, you clearly hate being here.
28 August 2009 at 12:16 am #7052Wouldnt be lied to and conned.Have a word with a few Chester fans about Steven Vaughan??? I dont think he could lie straight if he was dead. Or Newcastle fans about Ashley. Leeds fans about Ridsdale? Darlington Fans about Reynolds? Wrexham fans? Pompey Fans?
Could go on and on and on.
He’s not perfect, not by any stretch, but there are far worse out there and you seem to want him out so please answer me this..who would replace him????

If I hated being here I wouldnt go to games for years, have a season ticket etc. My love for the club doesnt mean I should love the bloke running it. We here about the debt the club as and how we dont make money, so Whelan put Lindsey on the board of directors. You couldnt make it up.

Plenty of us do.
And as much as I despise Maurice Lindsay, have you ever seen a poor bookie? Who better to make money for the club? And if you are insinuating that he is taking money out of the club, then back it up instead of just slagging him off.
Actually, what I don’t get about the Lindsay thing (changing tack slightly) is that when he was appointed, part of me thought it was a good thing, seeing what he had done to raise the rugby’s profile and all that. But since he joined our board, I don’t see what he has done at all.
Now, if you want me to criticse Whelan, I will on this one – appointing Lindsay was the biggest political own goal ever and for sure it was the best way to alienate most Latics fans.
28 August 2009 at 3:26 am #7102I don’t think ive ever come across a more negative bunch than my own set of fans. Thankfully Griff you’ve already put a lot of good points across.
Seriously, what do all the Whelan haters really want? He’s took us from the brink of extinction in the bottom tier up to our 5th season in the Premiership, something even far more established clubs such as West Brom & Birmingham can’t achieve on bigger budgets. Were a small town, a small club with a fairly weak fanbase in comparison to others and we’ve been holding our own in arguably the best league in the world for 4 years. I remember when we could only just do that in Division 3. The difference between then and now is quite surreal.
Sure, we are clearly trying to make profits by selling out best players which from the fans pov isnt what we want to see, but this scouting system is good for the club on the pitch short term (provided we can keep finding them) and great for the club off the pitch long term. It beats bidding for players like Gavin McCann and Lee Carsley anyway. Add to the fact Whelan is trying to get us out the red, something most numpties in Wigan don’t realise seeing as they have no education, never mind business sense. Without trying to sound negative, we will get relegated one day, just as all clubs our size do eventually, so id rather see us without any debts and immediately be able to push for a return as apposed to a Leeds situation. With money having ruined football below the big 4/5 there’s only so far we can go, as bad as that sounds.
28 August 2009 at 3:33 am #7104Good post mate alot of people on here are negetive and quite a few are multi-posters who change their name just to wind folk up .

Right, so he took us to premier league and your happy with that? What happens now makes no difference, he took us to premier league so thats it. What do you want? Dont you want to see the club progress? Dont you think after 3 consecutive relegation battles we should be going somewhere?
Theres only so far we can go, but putting your players and managers in the shopping window, thats not too far. You would rather see us relegated with no debt than try to achieve what you pay your money for. Do you think we will pull the crowds in by advertising what you just posted, ”were only a small club so will get relegated.” Well if thats your ambition, no wonder the atmosphere at Wigan is crap. :?28 August 2009 at 9:58 pm #7182I don’t think ive ever come across a more negative bunch than my own set of fans. Very good post, trouble with some of our fans they have no ambition,28 August 2009 at 10:41 pm #7192I don’t think ive ever come across a more negative bunch than my own set of fans. David Whelan CHOSE to do all those things,we as fans did not ask him,he gave with one hand and now seems to be taking back with the other.
lets examine mr whelans motives and what it actually cost him. Many of you on here, those who seem to be in the “whelan can do no wrong camp” keep saying how much it cost him, others accuse his critics of having no business sense well i am now going to say something that some of you will not agree with.
IT COST HIM NOTHING
why you may ask ?
It costs up to £50,000+ for a 30 second tv advert, but these have to be bought in groups, peak and off peak and this 50k is the tip of the iceberg, this figure does not include any of the production fees,
well all the way through the latics meteoric rise JJB had more free advertising airtime than a company of its size could ever wish for,
they even managed to get FREE airtime on the BBC,nigh on impossible seeing as the beeb dont do commercial adverts,
Latics never EVER got a mention without a link to whelan himself or JJB plc. in particular.
This was a marriage of two organisations that was a marketing company’s dream come true, and for a man who seems to crave publicity and a media attention as much as he does it was priceless.I suggest that mr whelans motives for ‘investing’ in wigan athletic were the same as the reasons he gave for ‘not investing’ in manchester united, every football fan in the lower leagues wanted their own david whelan and instantly recognised his company.
Now that the need for the ‘marriage’ is no longer required, or latics are not part of his long term business outlook, disposal is very high on his agenda.29 August 2009 at 3:03 am #7227And your point is what ?
29 August 2009 at 3:11 am #7230So you think Whelan turned down investing in Man Utd cos he thought investing in Wigan Ath was a better business venture?!
Thats essentially your point is it not?
