Sounds like they have an over-zealous club doctor to me
It’s a pity we didn’t have one.
How on earth did we pass Gary Caldwell in a medical, when he has the hips of a pensioner?
It’s a recurrent theme at Latics. A goalie with a bad shoulder and knackered back, a defender who’s survived a life threatening bout of malaria (which always stays in your system afterwards) a midfielder who has the threat of sudden death hanging over him, another midfielder who is supposedly in his twenties, yet looks like he’s forty, and now a striker who is carrying an injury.***
How the hell do we insure our players? Must cost us a fortune in premiums.
*** I decided not to include the spineless Spanish midfield ‘playmaker’ we have.

Because we have to buy at the cheap end of the market. You actually want these players to be fit as well??
13 January 2011 at 2:10 pm #55318To be fair Latics medical for once did its job & did identify Diame had a medical condition (unless he just ticked the box that asked the question)
I’ve long wondered about Latics medicals – Kevin Nicholls passed his for one, couldn’t play for us for donkeys coz he’s knee was goosed, made one appearance & then disappeared for 6 months again
Was it Sibierski who signed for us ahead of Bolton & quoted as a major reason that Bolton wanted him to undertake a medical that would take 3 days (quite wisely too given his injury problem pre & post signing for Latics) whereas the one at Latcis took a few hours?
13 January 2011 at 2:27 pm #55319I thought when we signed Caldwell we’d signed him rather easily. Celtic hardly fought to keep their captain, did they?
They knew! They knew about his hip problems. One hip would be bad enough, but BOTH of them? Like someone said at last home game, he takes an age to turn and you have to wonder how much its affecting him? (fella also said you can see him holding his hip at times. Not sure how right that is, but if so, get him out)
Good point about Sibierski, there. And Nicholls as well. We moan about our backroom staff at the club, and apart from when Bruce was here (and I believe we were as professional as we’ve ever been off the pitch then) I think we’ve always been slow on the uptake in issues such as this. Where as you can imagine clubs like Spurs, etc being very thorough in signing players, and putting the player through a 2, or even 3 day medical, you can imagine ours being a questionairre filled in by the player themself. When was the last time we had a potential signing either stopped, or delayed by a snag in the medical. I can’t recall it happening.
Kevin Nicholls. How did Wigan Athletic sign such a ‘promising young player’ from Charlton Athletic who were at the time, a Championship/Premiership club? Again, I believe they sold him to us knowing only too well he had dodgy knees.
I wonder if Diame’s condition came up in a medical, or was it more the fact that it was discovered that Barca and Real’s supposed interest had ‘cooled’ because of it?
13 January 2011 at 3:25 pm #55323I could well be mistaken but I’m sure that I remember us signing a player who was out injured at the time so you have to wonder what medical they undertook!!
Its all conjecture as I have no idea what the club’s medical process is but that Sibierski example gives a good indication of Latics level as opposed to other top flight clubs
On medical matters I also seem to remember Lee McCulloch being out with an foot/ankle injury once for longer than expected & it took the best part of 2 weeks for someone at the club to send him for an x-ray that revealed a break!!
