I am on nobody’s side here. Whelan likes the media limelight and uses that to put his opinions out in the public domain. Just because he’s the chairman of Wigan Athletic, the team that you and I have chosen to support, doesn’t mean his comments and utterings are exempt from criticism.
And some of what he has said in the past has been embarrassing and worthy of ridicule. Whether that justifies the suicide comment by Reade is of course up for debate and may well be in bad taste, but since when have journalists ever been guided by any kind of moral code.
