A nob-ender mate of mine says I can’t be a proper Wiganer because I have never heard of a butter pie, which apparently is a pie, the contents of which are potato, onion and butter?
Is it true? Am I indeed not a true Wiganer?

Yes this is true Griff. I had the same confusion sometime last year an got a similar answer from a friend

I thought you were on about my half-time pie ! The match was shite ! ” :)
2 March 2012 at 10:59 pm #82132I have spent most of my working life, well the last 25 years, based in bolton and blackburn/darwen and became aware of butter pies because of this, they seem to be a savoury that is perculiar to east lanacashire, (blackburn/accrington/burnley), although they do seem to have a sparodic presence in bolton.
What I can attest to, is having tried them on rare occasions there is no need for any “proper wiganer” to worry about not knowing they exist as they are probably the blandest tasting pie ever produced.3 March 2012 at 12:36 am #82134Butter pies are great with brown sauce ! My Mrs had a craving for butter pies when she was pregnant and I used to get her fix from the local Spar who stocked Greenhalgh’s butter pies pre wrapped ! Butter pies have been in leyland since the year dot ! The best ones however can be found at Gornalls on new Hall lane Preston !

3 March 2012 at 11:37 am #82160So, nobody seems to have experienced a butter pie in Wigan itself.
Therefore it appearrs not to be a Wigan thing at all.
Therefore, I am reclaiming my true Wiganer status.

And if a shop did sell them, the scousers would probably suet…….I’ll get me coat ;)
3 March 2012 at 8:45 pm #82169I believe the Galloways at the top of Beech Hill sells Butter pies.
So you are back to being an outsider Griff, sorry :P ;)4 March 2012 at 2:04 am #82266I believe it has to contain some kind of dead animal for it to be considered an authentic Wigan pie. Butter pies are not a Wigan delicacy.
