Could have won it and probably lost it – what was he doing up there in the last minute of injury time?
Great effort though. Bonus results today!!
7 April 2012 at 8:42 pm #84620If there’s was any fault attributed to Caldwell he should’ve headed it back across goal. Can’t legislate for the decisions we’ve had today. Absolutely gutted. I think the last time I felt this bad was Gillingham at Wembley.
8 April 2012 at 12:53 pm #84638A rush of blood in my opinion ! He shouldn’t have been in such an advanced position involved in a counter attack at such a late stage in the match ! He will know deep down that his actions will have lost us a vital point ! Nothing can be done to alter bent refereeing decisions but keeping ones head at a vital time can be achieved !!

I think its harsh that he’s getting some stick for it. We play with 3 centre halfs. They should all have license to get forward (1 at a time of course). For me its the other two’s responsibility to see his forward run and set themselves up acordingly.
Looking at the reply last night, he was well within his rights to get forward. Who’s to say that if he had stopped at centre half we would have got the draw? They may still have scored.
I’ve read for most of the season about how we never get men forward. Now that we are actually committing men forward they are getting critisized for it.
I personally hope this set back doesn’t change the way our centre halfs get forward and actually take a chance.
8 April 2012 at 1:37 pm #84643Can’t lay too much blame on Caldwell. He won the ball in defence and had little option but to retain possesion and look for the pass to Moses. Vic receives the ball and Caldwell had to push forward because no other player was in a good support position. IMO there were adequate numbers at the back to deal with the Chelsea attack, but they had the added bonus of an awe struck linesman.

With the time on the clock we should have kept possession and stuck with the well earned draw in my opinion ! Whichever way you try and dress it up it was foolhardy and a rush of blood to the head ! For all the ifs and buts that are going to be said in his defence, a definite point would have done me nicely !
8 April 2012 at 1:59 pm #84646People having a go at Caldwell are missing the point. Why was sammon, our centre forward, ambling rather than busting a gut to get to the box??? Caldwell asks for the ball off Moses about ten yards out and doesn’t get it, has a hissy fit but carries on regardless to move and gets in space at the far post for the chance. The only clever movement in the box yesterday was by our CENTRE HALF!! It’s that what needs looking at, forwards do your JOB.

For all the ifs and buts that are going to be said in his defence, a definite point would have done me nicely !I think its testament to the teams new found confidence that we have the arrogance to attack Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the last minute to try and win the game. Whether you want to risk a point in the attempt to win 3 is a matter of opinion. I personally want us to go for the 3.
I just feel we will accumulate more points by playing with confidence and taking risks. Yes we lost a point yesterday, but we may take a chance against united and it pays off.
If we was defending a lead then i’d agree with you.
8 April 2012 at 2:04 pm #84648I am happy that it was on the whole another solid performance and this current run of good play should stand us in good stead for the run-in as the others seem lost at this present juncture !

How ironic that is one of our chief “we play too much negative football and don’t attack often and quickly enough” brigade.
When I heard the incident described on Soccer Saturday it sounded a bit gung-ho but I thought I’d wait until I saw it before relying on Paul Merson’s view.
And as I saw it Caldwell saw a good opportunity to bring the ball out of defence and took it, and took it well. He’s entitled to do that in this system and at that point someone should have sat it for him.
I won’t criticise him for missing the chance; we have had strikers who are paid to do that dropping worse rickets than he did all season.
As for him abandoning his post? Well, as I said above someone should have sat in for him and watch their goal again and see who was our last defender back on the line when the shot went in. Gary Caldwell, that’s who.
Bet we wouldn’t be whinging about him taking risks had we scored from his break and won 2-1, would we?

On MOTD last night Alan Hanson highlighted how important Caldwell is to the latics defence is organisation and what not it showed Chelsea attacking when GC was organising the defence and what happened for there Winner  when he was legging it back as Griff says he was closest to it and just prevented it from going in
8 April 2012 at 6:51 pm #84672I’m not his biggest fan, but he’s been superb for the last 2 months.

So you didn’t see Figs have to pull away from Torres because we were a central defender down ? There was no sign of Caldwell when Figs left Torres completely unmarked ! Caldwell arrived just in time to see goal go in and he was in no fit state to stand upright let alone defend !!

Nothing wrong with that he did.

Well in my view it was a rush of blood ! By all means go up for set pieces during the game but in the final throws of a game like that why not just ” Stick ” and take the point ? He was pumped up and the adrenalin got the better of him when faced with what should have been an easy tuck away ! If he thought that he had left sufficient cover at the back why did he get his head down and run for his life like a mad man ?
