20 grand a week for four and a half years. That’s some deal for him. Safe to say he’ll be starting from the off so Boyce to right-back and Melchiot off?
13 January 2010 at 2:58 am #18101What about that other bloke as well?

I think it will be more a case of Boyce off.
13 January 2010 at 11:07 am #18115We are in a very strong position now defensively with 5 centre backs (Bramble, Boyce, Amaya, Gohouri and Caldwell) + Scharner who would make 6 although he plays in midfield.
My point is, our defence has always been short on numbers, even when Jewell and Bruce were in charge we were always short at the back. Now, Bobby has done what he said he would and started building on the squad making competition for places.
I think, if we sign another 4, 5 or 6 players in January and say 2 or 3 go out the door Bobby will have stuck to his word saying that no matter what happens this month our squad will be stronger by the end of it.

13 January 2010 at 12:43 pm #18122What about that other bloke as well? The other guy, Gohouri, has only signed until the end of the season initially, I believe. If this is true, he may just be seen as a make-weight. Caldwell does seem to be the more serious of the buys.
Candidate for new captain, perhaps? Could be the sort of vocalchivvying presence that we have missed since say, Browny left (cf. earlier thread)

you can sign as many defenders as you want but until the spanish one realises that we need the forwards scotland or rodalegga and the midfield of nzogbia, diame and thomas to get among the opposistion defence/midfield when they have the ball as heskey, valencia, palacious and cattermole or brown did last year ie defend from the front we will continue to open up to other teams and ship goals.

Spot on. I’ve seen it in countless games this season where the opposition midfield have the ball, you look round to see where their Latics counterparts are and all bar one are pushed upfield in the gap between the opposition defence & the last line of their midfield, meaning the defenders/defending midfielder are outnumbered.
Its happened time after time from the start of the season onwards & Bobby show’s no sign of fixing it as it happened regularly against both Man U & Hull
It also means that not only are they outnumbered when defending but when they try to pass their way out of defence they get closed down too easily
You could have the best defenders in the world at Latics but stick em behind our sieve of a midfield & we’d still be conceding goals left, right & centre13 January 2010 at 1:31 pm #18128Maybe Martinez will continue to sign players, but the goalkeeper and defence was the priority this week?
13 January 2010 at 2:29 pm #18132Exactly, he has to start somewhere.

Not saying he won’t but if he emplys the same tactics the same problems will remain
