Notice news reports are suggesting Everton are interested in Callum Lang. If a lad like that leaves one has to wonder what the point is in us even having an academy?

Gotta agree, but then again what’s the point keeping a player if he’s never gonna get played. Genuine question, how many players have come through our Academy in recent times to the full squad ?Pointless having one.
If DW had er sorted this when we were a few years into the Prem years we would more than likely have an established Academy producing young players worthy of a first team run out. Were in probably the best catchment area outside London for other clubs for released players

Promising kids in the area have always been snapped up by United, City, Liverpool and Everton. Parents heads are turned, and they sign up at the age of 8 or so (or if not formally signed there are “agreements”).

        #169132

Surely the question is if he is good enough to be linked with Everton why is a million miles away from our squad.

He probably wouldn’t play for Everton but these big clubs snap up anyone with potential. If they sign him then nobody else can have him. Just look what Chelsea do.
In the junior ranks 8 year olds etc the kids have to live within a certain radius of the home club grounds. Man City’s juniors are packed with overseas children. City move whole families from abroad to be within that radius. It’s all wrong but money now rules and nothing else. Just stinks.

Burnley scout around this area too. They operate a development centre at the JMO Sport park in Skem.

A couple of years back, I watched my lad play for his primary school against another school.one of their player was outstanding, and I mean, outstanding. His control, touch, everything was a class above everyone else. He was like a bloke playing against kids, running the whole game. I was flabbergasted and actually got talking to his parents and in all honesty, they were really modest and said they had no idea where his skills come from. He reminded me of a young Paul Scholes. One of his goals was a ‘Rabona’ right in the top corner from 20 yards. Ridiculous strike for an 11 year old. The best kid I’ve ever seen. I was amazed when his parents told me he hadn’t been snapped up. He was Wigan Boys captain at his age re group, but no club had snapped him up. I contacted Latics, and I also spoke to a Burnley scout about him and they snapped him up for their academy. Honestly, the lad was a belting player. Neither he or his parents realised just how good.
On the flipside, I’ve seen some kids round here, all gob and cocky. Signed up by United, City etc, yet they were nowhere near as good as this kid. That annoys me greatly.

I’m not sure if Latics local scouting is up to scratch.

Seriously Dave no disrespect but would you know that?. The lad you saw who was head and shoulders above the rest, but how good was the rest?. Agahowa looked head and shoulders above the rest of his team when we signed him. Looked a crock of shyte playing in the English league.

Hold on John, your changing things again, saying things I didn’t even say. I said he was a class above who he was playing with and against.

How would I know that? Because he was that bloody good, the other players actually clapped when he scored the 20 yard rabona. He scored 4 goals. Thats how. If someone is a good player, theyre a good player. My lad went training at Everton last year, among so called ‘decent’ players. None looked a patch on this kid.

I know a good player when I see one. So did Burnley, obviously.

A lad I worked with had a trial at Latics, was invited to an arranged game but sat on the bench for 75 mins or so. Came on bagged 3 goals and had 2 more superbly saved by the keeper. His excited parents were told after the game that he wasn’t what they were looking for. They see things we don’t Dave, that’s why they are paid scouts and we are not. As I said no disrespect, I’m just trying to give you a reason as to why the lad was overlooked.

Yeah but he was good enough for Burnley…..yet is a Wiganer, and captain of Wigan boys at his age group. Something wrong there, for me.

So obviously I can spot a player. You’ll not convince me that as someone who’s watched football, from North West counties, up to international level since the early 80s, that I can’t spot a player. I’ve seen the very best in the flesh, Messi, Iniesta…they’re right up there, the original Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos. Ive seen the other end too, a player at skem called Keith Tierney. Ex Everton youth. Tons of ability….liked a pint and had a big gut. Another Tony Kelly, who never made it due to lack of self discipline. Another one called Brett Goulding. Great player, but indisciplined. Would get sent off and into fights with supporters etc. Nutter.
I’ve also seen some players who I rated really highly…Zurawski, at Wisla Krakow, went to Celtic and scored a load. Jarasik, at Sparta Prague…stood out like a sore thumb. So much so, I went to Jewell about him. He thought we weren’t a big enough draw for him, as a championship club. I actually disagreed and thought we could get him cheap from the Czech club. Anyhow, he eventually later came over here to Chelsea, Via a Russian club. Played against us for Birmingham, I think. Point is, I was proved right about him being good enough, which gave me some satisfaction.

We’ve had plenty players over the years who have had me scratching my head about their ability as a player. Pinching money, I think the term is. Steven Appleton? John Robertson? Greg Strong? I’ll tell you what though, considering we signed Phil Daley from the Cheshire League, he did really well for us in his time here. Don Page did ok too. If he had finished as good as he could run fast, he wouldve been top class.

A robot can play a lot of this modern football. So many average players in league one, let’s be honest most teams weren’t up to much.

But surely then when these clubs release between the ages of 12-16 we should be in an ideal position to attract decent talents and develop them? Most of our scholars have been released from other clubs and follow the likes of Baines and Macmanaman in that respect. Just seems sad that we don’t promote any of the academy lads and the likes of Everton can potentially offer a transition that we can’t.

And note Donny. None of the teams you quote can sign foreign players up to the age of 16 so there’s no ‘foreign children’ in City’s academy up to the age of 15-16 when they can sign a pre contract as a scholar. UEFA would be all over it as its illegal and Barca recently received a transfer embargo on the back of such behaviour!

This kind of supports jr’s post, but I knew Greg Strong as a kid. Went to various football camps with him, played with him for Leigh Am’s etc..

Anyway, whilst I also knew some other good footballers at that age, he was head & shoulders above anybody I ever saw play at that age and that includes when i started coaching football at a primary school & when I was refereeing.
To be fair, he was a left winger back then & Latics converted him into a centre half/left back but it still doesn’t alter the fact that he looked a world beater when against other kids but distinctly average when playing adult football
Mind you he made a decent fist out of it as manager at Rhyl & last I heard he was Plymouth Argyle’s North west scout

I used to play with Ozzy. Leon Osman. Always a good player, but wondered if his size would hold him back. Had a very decent career.

Best players I’ve ever played with were Peter Reid, Graham Sharp, Kevin Sheedy in the 80s. Long story….
