1 Dennis Reeves
2 Kenny Morris
3 Billy Sutherland
4 Gordon Milne (player manager)
5 Doug Coutts
6 Ian Gillibrand
7 Derek Temple
8 Bobby Todd
9 Geoff Davies
10 Jim Fleming
11 Lee KooMy memory aint what is was but i dont think ive got many wrong though Ian Ledgard,s name is in my head as well
It would be nice to hear some of your memories as well bringing up names of past players of this wonderful club. :|
18 December 2010 at 4:06 pm #53518Think Graham Oates might have been in that team as well
Anyway first match for me FA Cup 2nd replay at Old Trafford v Port Vale late 60’s – think it went to extra time and I think we lost to a last minute ish winner
First home game FA Cup v Peterborough when Temple scored a penalty winner near the end ish – 17,000 on
18 December 2010 at 4:25 pm #53522youve got that wrong there tbh, jim fleming scored the winning pen not derek temple remember it as though it was yesterday
18 December 2010 at 5:02 pm #53526I was also at the Port Vale game at Old Trafford. We were given the Stretford End and remember a bottle being thrown from way back and just clearing the barrier! If it had him someone on the head it would have caused them serious damage.
First started going in ’64 and the team was something like:
Alan Halsall
Derek Houghton
Roy Wilkinson
Dave Crompton
Alf Craig
Dave Roberts
Les Campbell
Carl Davenport
Harry Lyon (God)
Allan Brown (player manager)
Walter Stanley18 December 2010 at 5:03 pm #53529That peterborough game was my first game too. Missed one or two since ;)

18 December 2010 at 6:43 pm #5353721 August 1972 v Morecambe in the NPL. Latics won 1-0 (goal by Fletcher) – the last victory ever I think ;)
Team was Reeves; Johnston, Sutherland, Taylor, Jackson, Gillibrand, Chadwick(Roberts), Oates, Fletcher, Rogers, Worswick19 December 2010 at 3:11 pm #53596Tuesday 20th October 1987. Wigan Athletic 3 Brighton 3.
What a first game, no wonder I’ve been hooked ever since!!
Mark Hilditch scored 2, then rattled the cross bar in the last minute. Chris Thompson knocked in the rebound to equalize.I was a 12 year old, and sat in The Phoenix Stand.
The team was:
1. Nigel Adkins
2. John Bitler
3. Barry Knowles
4. David Hamilton
5. Paul Beesley
6. Andy Holden
7. David Thompson
8. Chris Thompson
9. Bobby Campbell
10. Paul Jewell
11. Marco Van Hilditch
Sub. Stuart Storer
Sub. Andy AinscowAtt: 2,392
Can anyone confirm that Nigel Adkins went off injured with one of the subs (Storer or Ainscow) going in goal?
Seem to remember something really random happening.19 December 2010 at 5:52 pm #53605I remember the 3-3 game, but not if Adkins got hurt.
I remember him getting hurt and going off once or twice, and it was John Butler who went in net.
28 December 2010 at 9:26 pm #54088It’s taken me for ever to dredge all these back from memory but I’m pretty sure that my first game was against Newport County in 1980, just after the Everton cup game, and the first XI would have been something like:
Brown
Kettle
Davies
Methven
Fretwell
Brownbill
G Urquhart
Gore
Corrigan
T Quinn
HoughtonDon’t ask me what the score was. Actually, joey hinnigan or David Glenn might have been involved. Wasn’t long until we signed such greats as bobby hutchinson and dave McMullen.
28 December 2010 at 10:16 pm #54089@martinh (isn’t that what you’re supposed to write these days??)
The game against Newport was on 8 March 1980 (we played Everton on 26 January, so it was just a few weeks after).
We lost 1-0, the crowd was 6,128 (just look how far we’ve come!) and the team was:
Crompton; Ward, Whittle, Gore (sub Brownbill), Methven, Davids, Corrigan, Wright, Houghton, Quinn, Urquhart.

Seem to remember something really random happening.Nigel Adkins certainly was substituted in th egame, but whether it was Ainscow (who came on for him) or Storer who went in nets the record is silent.
29 December 2010 at 2:02 pm #54100Can’t believe I forgot jeff wright, too-cultured scourge of the popular side moaners. Surprised that maurice whittle was playing as I remember his big-money move. Wasn’t it the price of a set of kit?
29 December 2010 at 4:44 pm #54106Witton Albion in FA Trophy at home around feb 1972 . We won 1-0 i think but i couldnt see over the wall to clarify this !
