Football is a sport. It is also entertainment. The better the entertainment the more popular it becomes. It must evolve. There has been no major change to the laws of the game for nearly 80 years, only tweaks to elaborate on the wording.

Here is the question, how would you, improve the game without changing the fundamentals of pitch, goals etc. Here are a few examples.
      1. Why do we have a goal area. To place the ball for a goal kick. Abolish it and let the kicks take place from the penalty area. Goalkeepers would have to improve their distribution.
      2. Extend the penalty line to the touch line and amend the offside law to make it only in the final 18 yards.
      3. If a player is sent off, no matter where on the pitch the offence occurred, he should concede a penalty.
4.Matches start for three points but a draw only permits two points. Other sports have bonus points. In the event of a draw have a penalty shootout for a bonus point. Two points for the winner and one for the loser.
      5. Instead of two halves, divide the playing time into four. Say 25 mins then a five minute on the field break, another 20 minutes and then a full half time. Same in the second half
      6. A bad word in industry is overmanning. Try to have the same output with less staff.
Reduce the number of players to ten a side. Footballers are now massively paid and should be able to increase their productivity to match their increased pay.

There are six suggestions. Do you have ideas to make football more entertaining?

Away a lot, but always watching

        Scrap the offside rule altogether.
Bring back second third and fourth replays for cups.
        Scrap the play offs.
Scrap penalty shoot outs for golden goal winners.
Champions only to qualify for champions league.
Limit on three foreign players to include Irish Welsh and Scots players.
        Scrap international breaks.
        Stop in match drink breaks.
        Two subs maximum.
I know these points are a little more than about how the game is played but each on of these points has done nothing to improve football.

You do know it isn’t 1962 don’t you Donny?

The offside law needs seriously looking at and should at least revert back to if a player is offside, he is offside and fuck this stupid ‘interfering with play’ and ‘ whether he is ‘active’ nonsense off. Even the officials don’t fully know how to interperate it.

Play for 90 minutes would be a good one, we pay for 90 minutes so effing play for 90 minutes. If the ball goes out, or play is halted, for whatever reason, stop the bloody clock.

Did moving the ball forward 10 yards at a freekick if players encroached etc get abolished? I can’t remember seeing it happen for years, bring it back, and if the 10 yards takes it to the penalty area, then a penalty should be awarded.

I also agree with Donnys points of Champions League qualification, International breaks, amount of foreign players and replays, but only FA Cup replays as that is the most important Cup competition.

I think the rules should stay as they are. Why change (apart from a few tweaks over the years), something that isn’t broken.

What i would change is the champions league format that ONLY allows WINNERS to compete in it, ie; premier league, FA cup & even league cup winners. The UEFA cup should then be for the teams who finish 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th placed teams.

Yellow card = 15 minutes in the sin bin. 2nd yellow no longer = red and a 1 game ban.

Offside rule simplified back to how it used to be.

Backchatting to ref = yellow card (and 15 mins in the bin). Get some respect back.

No postponements for international breaks outside the premier league unless more than 3 players who have featured in >50% of first team matches selected (ie Owen Evans who got called up for Wales U23 despite not playing a single first team game doesn’t count).

Clubs to compensate all ST holders for any game selected for TV coverage with 5% of the ST fee.

          Champions League for Champions.

Bonus point for scoring 4 goals or more.

To say “it must evolve” assumes that the game is not already at its peak entertainment value. Any changes or “evolution” will bring some risk of the game becoming less entertaining/turning off some fans.

That said, I think that generally most find a wide open game with a high pace of play to be the most entertaining. Fresh legs generally allow for more running/a higher pace of play. While I would be against allowing unlimited substitutions or re-entry of players who previously subbed off (think hockey or basketball) because I believe that it would reduce coaching strategy too much; I do think allowing a 4th sub could help. I’d also be in favor of allowing an extra sub in weather conditions where the heat index at game time was above a pre-determined level.

I’m also for transparency – let’s scrap added time and have an official clock so everyone knows how much time is left. Stop the clock if someone is injured or time wasting. Too much room for corruption currently, and when the extra time is longer/shorter than expected, it always seems to favor the big clubs or favorites in international competition.

If it’s not broke don’t try and fix it.

Video refs to get decisions correct for referees who aren’t sure or who couldn’t see is all it needs.

Couldn’t agree more 78. They’ve already started ruining it with the off side rule..

Some good suggestions already mentioned, get rid of the cheating as well. definitely bonus points for goals scored. That could make it more entertaining for the supporter.

Fundamentals of the game should stay the same.

I do wonder actually why we need an offside law at all.
It was originally introduced to prevent goal-hanging (remember back to schoold days – the most hated kid would always goal hang, tap in, and claim credit).
But in the modern game a goal hanger is way, way out of influencing the game, and so most offside calls are a fine judgement of a yard or so this way or that. What does it matter?
              Get rid of it.

A bonus point for scoring 3 goals. Whatever the eventual result. I became convinced of that after watching Liverpool v Newcastle April 1996 finished 4-3. Newcastle deserved something from the game. The next game I saw was the most awful 0-0 ever, can’t remember who so probably Coventry v Wimbledon. They should both have got 0 points.

Shake up the play offs. Give much more priority to the original table. 3rd is usually 10+ points ahead of 6th but they start again. Play off system should be final at Wembley as now, 3rd place should go straight to final. Play off series, 6th away to 5th. One off game, extra time, penalties etc. Winner then through to play away at 4th. Same again…loser out, winner into final at Wembley v 3rd.

Champions League…FA Cup winner should get the 4th spot. They are FA Cup “Champions”  The Cup Winners Cup was merged into the Champions League in 1999 ish, so appropriate for the FA Cup winner to be in the CL not the EL….

play each game as 70 minutes ball in play, stop the clock every time the balls goes out or the game is stopped, instantly cut out all of the time wasting/pretend I am injured shenanigans

80 minute game turned into 120 minutes actual match time…what with the 15 replays to decide on a fingertip an inch or so :woohoo:

I’ve often thought about no offside up to the 18yard. It would certainly stretch the players and create more space in the middle.
