I see Liverpool fans believe nobody else can use the number 96 for anything, in reference to Top Shop selling a commemorative t-shirt for some rapper. We all know about Hillsbrough, it was a tragic event. But not everything that mentions 96 (it was a year as well believe it or not), Sheffield, FA Cup etc is trying to offend you.

It’s not the number 96 per se, but the whole package of red shirt, white number and the wording that is inappropriate, or at best ill thought through.

        Apparently yes

I agree George, not very well thought through, though as this article suggests, it was designed by someone that would not have made the connection. Says t is a Bob Marley reference though.

I believe Peugeot has a copyright on the use of zero in the middle of their car model numbers.

It is VERY close to the bone I’ll be honest but the link to anything else won’t stop scousers moaning and bring up Hillsbrough. Topman will be next on the list of places they won’t go. Unless of course there is a deal on that is too good to turn down.

They don’t buy The Sun (with good reason) but all seem to benefit from the holiday offers every year.

Exactly Garswood. I’m sure the United fans mocking it would have something to say if it was a red shirt, white number 58, plane and something about a crash.

Whoever designed it and approved it should be ashamed of themselves and looking for a new job very soon.

As for anyone else who laughs at it, it would be interesting to see what would happen if it was their club/town and the abuse that has followed from an absolute tragedy.

It’s hard to believe no one in the organisation realised the connection that would be made to Hillsborough.

But as the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

It was clearly done innocently enough & by someone with absolutely no interest in football which most people seem to have accepted.

Back to the OP though, it isn’t just the fact that the t-shirt had the number 96 on it – the fact that it also says “Karma” & “What Goes Around Comes Around” both of which were thrown at the Scousers in the aftermath of Hillsborough (coming so soon as it did after Heysel) just increases the coincidence along with the colour, the number & the style of the top

There is something mischievous or even malicious about that, I don’t think it is an innocent mistake at all. The timing as well smells, we are about a month away from the anniversary.
Whatever you think about scousers that is inappropriate.

And to answer the question of the post title, I think you can in connection with a word or symbol such as flake 99 or channel number 5!

They are both lyrics from the song it references as well though. Not too sure on the white rose though.

                    #167454

If it references Bob Marley why not red, gold and green; why red that looks like, and is numbered like, a football shirt? Why not have an image of Marley? The white rose is widely known as the symbol of Yorkshire, why is that there?
If it were just the number we were talking about then I would agree that offence need not be taken.
But this is too much of a coincidence.

So no reference to sheffield but one to yorkshire that people then put two and two together to make hillsbrough?

Rivalries apart, this is definitely in poor taste.

If it was purposely aimed at Liverpool then it has gone through at least 5 people all of varying management levels.

I doubt they were all “in on it”
