Why does he seem to insist on taking Latics fans on a constant roller coaster ride?
Villareal said all was agreed, so we obviously tried to change the agreement.
DW was talking about getting the fans excited in yesterdays Observer. If we end up with a final day panic buy after this, he will have done exactly the opposite. :(27 January 2010 at 1:22 pm #19959whelan is a complete and utter class t**t ,i never believe a thing the owd b*****d ever says ,never one for paying wages never one for pushing the boat out and hoping that if we had a decent run got in the top ten ,and then we would attract more through the turnstile ,what he does is always the opposit negative aproach ,no wonder thousands stay away .

The figures don’t add up mate. If we fill the stadium every week, that equates to an additional seven thousand in the stadium per game. Multiply that by nineteen, and you get an extra 133,000. If everyone paid £25 for their ticket, that’s just over £3.3 million extra revenue a year, which would pay the salaries of one and a half decent players.
The only way of making the revenue from gate receipts a bit more attractive, would be to increase the tickets cost per person, and that isn’t going to happen.
Whatever your personal feelings towards Whelan, he’s the best chairman this club could ever hope for.
27 January 2010 at 2:15 pm #19967Maybe people should stop believing some of the reports in newspapers about players being signed, or what is said on the internet. Try waiting until the official announcements before you get excited about a signing. Of course Whelan will talk up potential signings, why wouldnt he. Do we alway have to keep going over the same conversations about him being the devil or god…….
Why not vent the anger and dissapointment on yourself, as it was you who believed the media hype. You never know.
27 January 2010 at 2:19 pm #19968Ticslad, is whelan the only one allowed to play the negotiating game in the media. You are prepared to blindly believe what the spanish say but not necessarily what whelan says. Why not wait until the deal is done or confirmed as off before wildly guessing what may or may not actually be going on?

He shouldnt get our hopes up when he had no intention of offering him more than a grand a week or something.
Ok here’s my theory, Whelan has been the best thing to happen to our club, he got us to where we ae and deserves full credit, and does not deserve slating. My feelings are that now he has done with us all he can and he will not be putting enough money into our club to get us into europe. Time to move on i think.27 January 2010 at 3:19 pm #19975Wildly guessing? There were some pretty wild guesses….
Marco Ruben him self
Villa Real
Wigan Observer
Sky Sports
BBC Sport
Guardian
Wikipedia
Sun
Mirror
Evening Post
Rivals
Mail
Marco Rubens goodbyes
etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etcThat’s some serious wild guesses.
To be honest though, I should have known better. Even at Martinez unvailing something still went wrong, so I have had my hands slapped again.
What do we have now, is it 2 or 3 days left of the window open? After this we can only sign players unattached can’t we?
May be next Monday looks favourite then. :roll:27 January 2010 at 3:23 pm #19976Ticslad, is whelan the only one allowed to play the negotiating game in the media. I agree he’s past it now and I don’t think he’s got the ability to take us further…..but what’s the alternative? Some foreign ‘fly by night’ cowboy who will lead us down Portsmouth’s road? No thanks.
I think what we need is perhaps for Whelan to stay at the head of things, but to work on generating fresh investment. From where, I have not got a clue. Whether we can possibly ever do that, I don’t know. Would you invest millions in a club….but let someone else have the final say? No, probably not.I’m not sure what we are asking for in negotiations……but I’d like to know.
TICSLAD- You’re not wrong.

I think he will sell soon, but I don’t think he will just let anyone take us over.
He will be as prudent over potential buyers as he has been over ever other aspect of our club.
He may keep a tight hold of the purse strings at times, but seeing what has happened to a lot of clubs lately, that isn’t a bad thing.
Would you rather be in our position and situation, or that of Leeds,Pompey,Palace,Chester etc.
I know which I would choose.27 January 2010 at 3:38 pm #19979Where did Whelan say he had signed?
There has never been anything on the Wigan Athletic official website about this transfer, and to my knowledge, no comments from Whelan or Martinez, and all reports of the alleged transfer (Sky Sports, ESPN, Telegraph etc) state their source as being the Villarreal website, the player, or the Villarreal Press Office.
To me, it sounds like folk at Villarreal has been shouting their mouth off prematurely. Had they not, this done deal of a transfer would still be on the rumour websites, and nobody would be kicking up a fuss.

Yes, and here are those comments:According to chairman Dave Whelan, Latics agreed a ‘substantial fee’ with Villarreal for the 23-year-old Argentinian hotshot late on Monday night.
“We’ve been in negotiations with the club in Spain for a week or so. Roberto is getting the lad over later today to have a closer look at him and to discuss personal terms. We all want it to happen, so we’ll wait and see.”
Not a mention of the deal being completed.

I didn’t say that he said it was completed. You said he hasn’t made comments. But he has, which got fans hopes up.
27 January 2010 at 4:51 pm #19989Don’t pick peanuts out of poo James, you know what I was implying. I asked where did Whelan say he had signed?
All the reports saying he’s signed, he’s saying goodbye to Villarreal etc. have come from Villarreal. Obviously Whelan is going to be asked about it by the press, and he even ended his quote with ‘We all want it to happen, so we’ll wait and see’
I wouldn’t consider that to be building hopes up.
