That’s all well and good, but if you add up all the money from the lads’ subs each week and the extra income from the advertising then it’s no wonder he can afford to spend half the year in his caravan in Morecambe!

did by any chance the plumbers merchants owner get a platform onto the national media stage to air his radical outlook on every subject known to mankind, or did his company go from cheap tacky off peak adverts with voice overs from stuart hall to being on every football programme in the land at peak time viewing that propelled his companies sales and ultimate value through the roof.

so to answer your question “unsung or leach”

well neither actually – or even a bit of both, but remember the plumbers merchants first thought is and always was throughout his whole career is ‘what’s in it for me’, and that is not a dig at him – i would be the same, but let us not forget when going all misty eyed he always knew what he was doing, and if it was just for the people of the town perhaps he could have just paid his staff a little more than starvation wages when he was making millions.

I take it Mr Whelan went round press ganging people to work for him then? :snooty:

People know what money he pays, its up to them if they take a job with him, its a simple as that. There are loads of other places in Wigan that pay shyte wages, Heatons and Uncle Joes are probably two. The directors of those companies are also rolling in it I bet. :o

Good on whelan for keeping jobs in wigan for many years and keeping potential queues at Brocol House from going all the way up king Street every day.
He could have easily taken his business elsewhere and probably made more money.
The guy can’t do right for doing wrong. :naughty:

Not quite true though is it?

I’m no stock broker, but a little web based research and I found that JJB shares were over £4 in 2001, but only around £2.75 when Whelan sold up in 2007.

Some people can’t see the wood for the trees, idiots. Without him we could well be watching Chorley Town now…
