Looking at our busy fixture list, I think Coyle has little choice but to continue to rotate the squad.
He may also have to decide where his priorities lie – the Championship or the Europa League – rather than try to keep going in both. The two critical fixtures are QPR (home) and Kazan (away).
It’s hard to see any pattern in Coyle’s formations, so predicting today’s team – especially the forwards – is difficult. Let’s say – without any great confidence –
Carson
Shotton Barnett Rogne Crainey
Watson McCann
McManaman Gomez McClean
Holt27 October 2013 at 11:21 pm #122806The only formation i see is a back four,it seems the rest just bob about here and there.Tactically inept.
28 October 2013 at 2:16 am #122834I got 6 out of 11 right;
Nicholls
Boyce Rogne Barnett Perch
McArthur McCann Watson (Espinoza – 72′) McClean (McManaman – 66′)
Holt (Fortuné – 76′) PowellI’ll have to think about who Coyle will pick against QPR and Kazan.
28 October 2013 at 2:23 am #122836Well done you
29 October 2013 at 11:01 pm #122904Let’s assume Coyle wants to play a strong team against QPR.
He then has to pick the teams for Huddersfield and Kazan. I think he will spread his resources across both teams, resting some first choice players in each game.
Team to play QPR should give some idea of Coyle’s first choice team; perhaps
Nicholls
Shotton Rogne Barnett Perch
McArthur Watson Gomez McClean
Holt Powell31 October 2013 at 4:33 am #122951Nicholls
Boyce Shotton Barnett Perch
Gomez McArthur McCann McManaman
Holt PowellI got 8/10 of Coyle’s starting selection right tonight. He’s been a hard man to second guess but this gives us a much clearer view of his preferred first team.
He seems to prefer McCann to Watson – but there may be little or nothing between McManaman and McClean
Now he has to pick a team for Huddersfield, bearing in mind the long trip to Kazan to come. Anyone care to hazard a guess who he will choose?
I think Watson, McClean, Rogne and Crainey may all come back. I also think Coyle will give Boyce the honour of being captain in Kazan, so will rest him on Saturday. That would give us a team to play Huddersfield something like;
Nicholls
Shotton Barnett Rogne Crainey
McManaman McArthur Watson McClean
Holt Powell31 October 2013 at 12:31 pm #122955If he’s fit, I’ll be amazed if he brings in Albrighton for just 28 days and then doesn’t bother to play him.
He can have a rest when he gets back to Villa.
31 October 2013 at 1:22 pm #122961I wonder if he has a Russian visa?
31 October 2013 at 1:29 pm #122962Trouble is, are we not rotating too much & therefore having no consistency within the team.
8 November 2013 at 5:25 am #123298Wigan home to Huddersfield
Nicholls
Boyce Shotton Barnett Perch
McCann Watson
Gomez Powell McManaman
FortuneI thought Coyle would rest Boyce and give him the honour of leading the team out in Kazan. He didn’t, but he did rest Holt. I got just six out of eleven right, and not necessarily in the right position.
Wigan away to Kazan;
Nicholls
Shotton Rogne Barnett Crainey
McArthur Perch
McManaman Espinoza McClean
HoltAn interesting selection, resting some players but still relying on Barnett in defence. Perch appeared in midfield and, surprisingly, so did Espinoza.
Next up, Yeovil. However, all the current first team squad have made the long trek to Kazan and back, with the exception of Albrighton (ineligible) and Beausejour (injured). Presumably, the rotation will continue and some rested players will return. Espinoza could even keep his place.
Let’s say Coyle will go for;
Nicholls
Boyce Shotton Barrett Perch
McArthur Watson
Albrighton Powell Espinoza
HoltSubstitutes to come on; Fortune, Gomez and McClean
And let’s hope they get that elusive away goal.

Boyce Shotton Barnett Perch
McCann Watson
Albrighton Powell McManaman
FortunéCoyle seems to have settled into 4-2-3-1. The defence is fairly predictable, but midfield and the choice of forward remain a mystery to me.
I thought he played narrow with Fortune, with Gomez on the right and McManaman on the left. With Holt he seemed to play wide with two conventional wingers.
But today he’s picked Fortune with Albrighton on his correct side and McManaman on his wrong side. I admit defeat. I can’t see any consistency in his selections.
But at last it has succeeded – they have actually scored away! Holt has replaced McManaman and crossed for Fortune to score. And now Espinoza (left-footed) has replaced Albrighton (right-footed). Thank goodness for the international break.
