Excellent night, despite the poisonous atmosphere. I can’t help slipping into old ways thinking that we would blow it. I wasn’t content even at 3 – 0 at newcastle, always concerned that we may collapse and let it go. The longer that the game went last night the more i feared one of their long balls (their only attacking option) would slip (conditions were bad) through to Yakubu and we would blow it. But we delivered again and I should credit the team to see that we are no the same team that could ship a bucket load of goals in a short period of time.

I spent many a dark month away from the boards becuase they were depressing and I never waivered in my belief that we were better off under Bobby, even if we went down. For sure I was convinced we would go down, particularly after not picking up points in February when we played the teams we need to beat. I even went to the expense of going to Anfield and the Emirates as I though I wanted to see them play there one last time.

How wrong was I (and I am a committed lightsider)!

And today we see questions about Bob’s loyalty. FFS this is a man who’s contract negotiation included pursuading DW to buy Christopher Park and improve the training facilities. Sounds like a selfish money grabbing fat cat to me!

Of course Bobby will go in the next year or two and to a larger club because staying with Wigan will never allow him to fullfil ambitions of champions league football and that is not him being disloyal. When he does leave he will leave us with an infrastructure that will help us secure our future.

Regardless of what you doubters think, this man is Wigan through and through (he even has a wigan twang to his accent). If he goes today we will still be better off than we were and I for one would wish him all the best.

I think he will stay for one more year and show the world what he can do with a very limited budget and then he will replace Arsen Wenger – Remember these word.

      Great post that, mate.

I too convinced Mrs Griff that a trip to the Emirates was justified on the basis that it might be the last one. She’s now convinced I set the whole thing up! Yeah right, like I have any control over Bobby’s tactics and selections or the team’s performances!! Took me ages to persuade her that Filmoss and Hindley Blue are responsible for those aspects of the club. ;)

The only thing I would disagree on is that, all things being equal and if it was up to him, I think Roberto will stay here for longer than just one more season. I certainly hope so, anyway.

Darksiders never questioned Martinez loyalty or his love for the club, we questioned the ability of the man who has answered his critics in true style and there cannot be one darksider that can question anything he has done now. We were wrong and I think that is put to bed now and boy am I glad we were wrong as is probably everybody else on this board.

We’re not remotely arsed that you were wrong. We’re just happy that we were right all along. ;)

        Good post

Without wishing to set the cat amongst the pigeons, consider the following managerial vacancies close season

        – Aston Villa, WBA – forget it
        – Tottenham – Redknapp stays

        AND

        – LIVERPOOL ! The Americans have had enough of Dalglish, who moves upstairs to become Director of Football (or something similar) and J Henry seeks Whelan permission to speak to Martinez (given full autonomy over football matters).

Do you think he would go ? I do(history, football tradition…)

Where RM scores highly this time round is in his transformation of play (ex 4-5-1 week in, week out over 2.5 years) to a much more fluid, slick, offensive 3-4-3. Proof at long last that he is willing to modify his set up to get best results.

He may need to do more of the same next season (Latics), driven by either players at his disposal or teams getting wise to our style of play.

Even Barcelona – one way of playing – were recently found wanting against Chelsea (no Plan B).

Would he be ready for a big job like that I mean it’s took him three years at this club to get his playing aspects across three years he would not have at Liverpool more like three months imo

I think Liverpool would go for some one proven they want success yesterday something Bobby would struggle to deliver imo for such a big club

Understand BUT at Liverpool he would have funds at his disposal (greater flexibility) and in the short-term ‘King Kenny’ on hand to offer advice, etc. as necessary (continuity, etc.)

Hopefully, the situation won’t arise though stranger things have happened …

Was not a certain D Moyes something of a rookie when he went to Everton. And now …? Next Man U manager (??). Everton, most certainly have not had cause for complaint under his management

I just think that the average Liverpool supporter demands at least a top four finish and a domestic trophy at least per season you saw what happened to Roy Hodgeson and he his a experienced manager and how they are gradually turning on Kenny after 12 months no in my opinion to soon for Bobby

The thing is Liverpool arent a big club anymore :)

Thankfully, JH (Pool) wouldn’t give RM what he wanted (full autonomy over footballing matters) and RM did us proud in deciding to commit to Wigan and build on the foundations put in place.

Hopefully, next season will see continuous improvement and much improved league position. Last 10 game form this year (7-1-2), TOP TWO material, bettered only by City.

More of the same please, Bob (great football + results) B)

The Martinez-Whelan relationship has no doubt played a part in RM’s decision to turn down both AV and LFC; Whelan (for all the flack he gets) deserves credit for the manner in which he has acted in both scenarios.

Hopefully, he (Whelan) will now push the boat out a touch (investment in quality), RM will buy quality (no Scotland, Bosselli..) and his decision to stay convinces others to do likewise (Moses, Figueroa, Di Santo ..).

These 3 elements in place, we must surely go into next season with a level of confidence never previously known.

Hell, we might not even be the bookies favourites for relegation come August… :cheer:

            2012/13 Fixtures out in 3 weeks !!
