We’ve got a better team this year than last, if you judge results against the opposition we’ve played this season with results against the same opposition last season.
2007/8 season:
A v Villa. Drew 0-0
H v *West Brom. Won 2-1
H v Man Utd. Lost 1-2
A v Everton. Lost 4-0
H v West Ham. Lost 0-1
A v Arsenal. Lost 1-0
H v Chelsea. Lost 0-1Total points: 4
Goals for: 3
Goals against: 10This season, against the same teams (*barring West Brom, who were the Championship winners the previous year, and have been substituted in this table for Wolves, who won it last year) we’ve scored 7 goals, conceded 13 and gained 9 points.
So, Martinez’s boys are better than Bruce’s, right?
Discuss.
27 September 2009 at 5:59 pm #9816Yesterday will go down in the history books and rightly so, the biggest thing for me now is consistency. We play Hull next and will probably be odds on favourites, so we need to make sure we dont let our standards drop. Man City after that, give anything to see them lot leaving early again.

28 September 2009 at 1:22 am #9879I think yesterday shows that we are certainly moving in the right direction.
Certain players , such as Thomas & Diame , are getting better with each game.
But for me the most pleasing thing is that Bob got it spot on. He made a couple of small changes to the team , including the dropping of his big signing Gomez , & they worked perfectly.
I thought Scotland looked like a proper target man , and Hugo constantly looked dangerous outwide. Also by coming infield , Hugo supported our main striker better than ever before this season. Also whatever you may think about Scharner as a midfielder , with the 3 central mids we had on Saturday not many teams will outwork us.
28 September 2009 at 2:51 pm #9899Have to agree with Squire Manny Brown, there was a lot of effort and skill in our midfield on sat.
Another thing I have noticed this year is every game we seem to be getting breakaways with more forwards than defenders, with a bit more composure we will score from one soon.

Every player played great, and battled like mad.
Scharner? Magnificent. Showed what he is capable of, and as long as he plays like that, he has to start. Loved the role he played in.
