Anyone have the pleasure of being there last night? I’m not a massive fan but I appreciate their capacity to write top notch, hard not to like stadium rock anthems like Paradise, In My Place etc.

The show they put on last night (and the night before, by all accounts) was absoulutely fantastic. The lasers, fireworks, big screen images and animations, lightshow, inflatables, confetti cannons and 50,000 wristbands flashing in unison, triggered by the music, were a truly amazing sight. The music wasn’t too bad either.

I chose to stick pins in my eyes rather than suffer coldplay, amazing lightshow or not.

Few people at work went and said it was top notch.

I dont know why people hate Coldplay so much brilliant song writers and a breath of fresh air to the crap that is on the radio and music channels nowadays.

Coldplay are often compared to U2 and Oasis due to, well, national and temporal proximity. Since U2 were shall we say past their prime by the time Coldplay showed up and Oasis were busy imploding in the post-Standing on the Shoulders of Giants world, everyone was like ” yeah New Britpop! ” and verily Coldplay were crowned king without anyone noticing that they were actually quite shit !
Coldplay are U2 without the anthemic stadium-filling feeling of, well, U2. Coldplay are Oasis without the hooks and the swagger.Basically Coldplay are an amalgamation of all of the things that made U2 and Oasis good without actually possessing any of the things that made those two bands stadium greats, yet they still have the desire to do the things that Oasis and U2 once did. Coldplay has pretension of world-changing rock without having anything to say. They attempt to write big, epic, hubris-fueled songs without understanding what makes an epic song stand out. So instead the music of Coldplay is just a joyless -if technically proficient – slog through songs that just kind of listlessly plod along for a while and then eventually mercifully end. The end result is rather tedious and soul destroying !
There is more to an epic song than making it long, tossing in a lot of instruments and filling it with pseudo-intellectual lyrics. An epic song requires three things: Presence, timelessness, and emotional force. If done right an epic song doesn’t need to be complicated at all. It just needs to grab your attention, hold it and then remind you of that moment every time you hear it. So why are Coldplay shit? That question is actually surprisingly easy to answer. They have boring songs, a less-than-charismatic front man and in general lack presence. Yes but plenty of bands are like that I hear you say and so perhaps that’s the wrong question to ask !
The real question should be “Why does it matter that Coldplay are shit ? ” The answer is, “It shouldn’t but it does because the music industry was desperate to find a new band to plug in to a gap that U2 and Oasis weren’t exactly filling any more “. U2 and Oasis possessed those intangibles that create greatness. Coldplay never did and never will. Simply anointing them the next big thing on the British music scene was never going to change that now was it !! A few flashing wristbands and lasers does not mask boring piano centred drawn out dross ! :)

That’s a well thought out and considered piece as to why you think Coldplay aren’t very good but misses the point of my original post.

Coldplay aren’t my favourite band but IMHO they surpass U2 and Oasis. I have a number of U2 albums, bought on the cheap mainly to see what all the fuss is about, and I just don’t get them in the same way that I don’t get The Rolling Stones. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ‘shit’ though. They have legions of fans that adore them. I have all Oasis’ albums with no idea why. I get them a little more than I get U2 because they actually have one or two tunes in their repertoire and the Gallagher brothers have some car-crash type charm that gets your attention. As far as the craft of songwriting’s concerned, they’re not very good. They’re far better musically than lyrically. They’ve nothing much to say but say it with a passion. A bit like Coldplay. I have all Coldplay’s albums too and yes, there’s some dross in there but when they do get it right, they really get it right.

The shows they put on in Manchester at the weekend were incredible. They pushed boundaries in innovation as far as stadium concerts are concerned and it would be a very hard hearted person to put their musical foibles against the energetic, thundering show they put on. They’re not your thinking man’s band (nor are U2 and Oasis most definitely aren’t) but when your just turned sixteen year old lad says it was the best night of his life, it goes some way, in my mind, towards some sort of vindication of their status in the world of music.

People have musical differences but you must ask yourself why Coldplay come in for a lot of criticism for being boring and Martin with his sanctimonious pious manner doesn’t escape the critics either ! With all due respect if your son had been at a U2 stadium gig or an Oasis stadium gig back in the day when they were getting all the hype I am pretty sure he would have been swept along with all the false enthusiasm of the crowd of that particular era. For me Oasis were actually better than ever just before their demise and the last stuff they wrote was far better than the commercial media fuelled stuff that got them to those lofty heights. U2 in my opinion were better in the beginning with their raw high octane jump around tracks and music only priorities but all that went wrong for me when they too fell foul of the self righteous trait especially Bono ! Colplay may indeed now put on a special effects extravaganza but that to me just stinks of diversions ! I remember Martin on a live recording back in 2003 just before they played yellow asking the crowd to stand up to listen to it and he would buy them an ice cream ! Now they had two supposedly epic albums out back then but still no stage presence or charisma whatsoever ! That has been replaced by thousands of pounds worth of diversion effects !! Personally, I don’t really listen to commercial music these days and I have opted to go back underground listening to neo psychedelia and similar genres. Music is whatever floats ones candles and so if you enjoyed your gig then good on you, I was just trying to explain in a way why a lot of people file Coldplay under ” Boring ” !

Here is an example of what I listen to. They are actually mates of mine form Leighton Buzzard ! You might even like them !

Did I say it was my work or indeed take credit for it ? No I didn’t ! How detective Jonny came across the blog does make me think of him in a different light I must admit ! I am now thinking smarmy clever get the type who goes that extra yard to prove someone wrong ! Not a good trait really DJ ! I used and indeed edited some of that blog because remembering it from many moons back I thought it explained a little better than the usual ” crap ” and ” Boring ” adjectives usually associated with Coldplay ! Like I said, if you enjoyed it then fine but the big extravagant stage show doesn’t mask the dreary Martin and his lyrics of fixing things and being sorry and down beaten etc etc etc !!Like I said before, why do Coldplay come under so much fire ? Even from other musicians ! They are even used as a word in the Urban Dictionary !!

Other bands I would put in the same category are Snow patrol ( 1st 2 albums on indy labels were great )but major label put an end to that and keane ( Like Coldplay , rich kids with no charisma or edge )currently lying in the “where are they now files” ! ( From ” Spinal Tap ” Jonny !! ) ;)

Detective Jonny thought ‘Bloody ‘ell Phil, that’s a well written piece’; copied and pasted the first line, put it into Google and up came the article. All within ten seconds. Minimal effort.

Was actually looking to see if did indeed write music blogs (as there is no author’s name on the piece you’d could have blagged it!)

As it happens, I agree totally on the Coldplay opinion: dull, waiting room/coffee table music. They’re a modern day Dire Straits (but as least Dire Straits had Mark Knopfler’s guitar playing to its credit).

It was indeed well written and so I nicked it or part nicked it because it mirrored my own thoughts and as I thought that back when I first read it I thought I would use some of it again ! :)

In my opinion U2 are the most over rated band ever and should not even be mentioned anywhere near Oasis.

Nancy boy commercial songs that belongs with the musical disease that is X Factor.

I wonder how much of Bonos facebook windfall went to the kids in Africa.
