Taken from a newspaper article today.
“STEVE McCLAREN has edged closer to a shock return to management after Wigan scrapped a move for Gus Poyet.
McClaren, Poyet and Owen Coyle were the leading contenders to replace Roberto Martinez.
But chairman Dave Whelan has whittled his list down to two after refusing to pay the £1.7m compensation fee written into Poyet’s Brighton contract.
Nah come on Dave if that’s true thas bit thi noowers oft spiyt thi grid.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!14 June 2013 at 3:07 am #116047I hope that’s not true I’d have taken Poyet before the other 2 any day of the week.
14 June 2013 at 3:17 am #116049I’m now thinking Coyle. Let’s see if I’m right, come Monday. Can’t see anything happening before then, to be honest. But hey, what do I know?
14 June 2013 at 3:57 am #116052Would prefer mclaren, but if its coyle i wont be too disapointed.
Whoever it is will get my full support.
14 June 2013 at 10:16 am #116055We’re not talking about a massive amount of money in football terms, what has Poyet really done to warrent paying compensation for him over the other two candidates, Coyle got Burnley up and McClaren has won foreign league titles and a domestic cup, both have been more successful and are available for free, it’s easy to say Whelan is just being tight but on this occasion he’s probably doing the right thing in my opinion, all Poyet’s done so far is show promise . I think you are saying Coyle as he would be the cheaper option Griff but I think Whelan will box clever on the wages side and pay McClaren on results .
14 June 2013 at 1:32 pm #116056I’m now starting to think Coyle might have got it.
14 June 2013 at 1:35 pm #116057Why ?
14 June 2013 at 2:11 pm #116058Heard yesterday that our new Manager will be on a £2m bonus if he achieves promotion back to the Prem at the first attempt. If that is true then DW is wise to dangle that £2m carrot, rather than fork out £1.7m when nothing has been achieved yet !
14 June 2013 at 2:23 pm #116059Why ?Just an inkling.
14 June 2013 at 3:01 pm #116060Coyle is 2-5 fav now.
14 June 2013 at 3:06 pm #116061I think you are saying Coyle as he would be the cheaper option Griff but I think Whelan will box clever on the wages side and pay McClaren on results .I’m thinking more because of his record of getting teams out of the Championship, to be honest
14 June 2013 at 3:21 pm #116062Does anyone find themselves completely underwhelmed by the candidates , what ever our differences on Martinez at least it was a roller coaster of excitment massive highs and desperate lows, perhaps we need some down to earth realism and a steadier ship, but the only thing that springs to mind with this,
its going to be ever so dull after the past 4 years.

I see steady times ahead.
Christ, this forum is going to get boring with nothing to argue about.
