Too often we play too deep and we lack attacking imagination and bravery.

However, some of the performances this season – example, Liverpool (the last hour) and Wolves (particularly the first hour or so in the away game) – suggest that we do have it ‘in our lockers’ to play in a more ambitious, positive, and creative manner.

When we have played well under Martinez it is infinitely more enjoyable that when we were winning under Steve Bruce.

If we could return to taking a few more risks in trying to work the ball forward more purposefully, more quickly, more often, and get our 3 middle-of-the-park midfield players and both full backs showing a little more inclination to get forward to support the attack then I would be more than happy, regardless of whether or not this ultimately results in relegation.

Tin hat time mate, but for what it’s worth – and as you already very well know – agree 100%.

One other gripe that we mentioned again on Saturday concerns the insistence on playing the ball out from goalkeeper to centre-back/full-back every single time, often putting ourselves immediately under pressure.

Although the big hoof up front won’t always result in an unexpected goal like on Saturday, so it is not always wrong to sack the regimented passing-out-from-the-back game.

Not more enjoyable just a lot less frequent and more of a shock. I love seeing my team win don’t care how or who against or who is in charge.

      Not more enjoyable

Just your opinion though isn’t it, and therefore no more valid than anyone else’s

Firstly fantastic post about time someone came out and came up with something constructive.

Agree totally I think this lack of positivity in going forward has been caused by some of the maulings we received last season and the beginning of this. I think the major issue with it is confidence. Against Wolves we started abit flat footed at but when we got going, funnily enough after Henry was sent off, we looked a good attacking team and Gomez came into his own. I think we are always wary of conceding and so do not want to over commit, which in the formation we have with just one out and out striker kills us. We need midfielders bursting forward and supporting Hugo.

One final point is just when we play well we move at pace the ball is knocked about with intent. We seem to struggle when we have time on the ball to think. We don’t seem to have someone to pick a pass in the centre of midfield when the play dips so we create space better when its one touch stuff and the ball is zipped about.

I couldn’t agree more , but looking at the formation often used by martinez, it dosen’t seem good enough for attacking and the link between midfield and fowards is not a strong one … next match you look how many dangerous passes we get through to fowards…not many and if rodellaga is up on his own it is even more unlikley we will score. he has got to get rid of this daft formation… i reckon defenders of the oppostion LOVE it most of the time.

We need a link man in midfield who can pick a pass. At the beginning of the season it was McCarthy who was being asked to get further forward. I’m not to sure of his attacking quality but I know Watson is no attacking midfielder to link up play.

we need our midfield players, having received a pass from a defender, to be more inclined to turn with the ball and head in a forward direction instead of the first instinct being to pass it back to whence it came just to be safe

at a higher lever people like modric and our old boy palacios did this well for spurs on sunday; at more-of-our-level, danny murphy did it well for fulham on saturday

What we need is a new manager who doesnt talk shoite and trys to put spin on the rubbish HIS team have served up again,19 goals scored says it all, martinez said last week the lack of goals does not worry him, well it should do because if you dont score you dont win games and all season we have struggled to score and win matches they both go hand in hand. MARTINEZ OUT :P

what we arguably need is someone (my guess is that it would have to be DW) to encourage/instruct RM to encourage/instruct his players to play in the more positive manner in which we know that they can do even within the current ‘style’, and in fact have done very effectively at times this season (liverpool, arsenal, wolves (twice), stoke, newcastle, birmingham, wba)

No he isn’t, he is on the right board, all those others that speak sense (or otherwise) are on the wrong board (assuming they don’t already post on here)…

Football is a matter of opinions, but I’m very stubborn in my ways.I’m very clear in what I want to do and the way I want to play and I will never change !

Well that’s obviously put Whelan in his place then.
