18 January 2011 at 12:23 pm #55938Andyc,Bobbys been told 6 months ago by DW to adopt a more pragmatic style of football to keep us in the Premier League,i’ll quote Bobs reply!.
Football is a matter of opinions, but I’m very stubborn in my ways.I’m very clear in what I want to do and the way I want to play and I will never change !There is nothing wrong as such with the way that RM wants to play.
My point is that whilst we always play the RM way we do it differently in some games or at least some parts of some games than in others.
No-one could complain about our style of play against Liverpool, Arsenal, or particularly in the first half away at Wolves.
The difference is that in the games mentioned we have played the RM way but have done so in a more positive manner than we have done in others.
What we need is for the positive RM stuff (which is great when it is happening), including getting more players forward quickly and taking a few more risks, to be encouraged and the side to side safety first RM stuff to be discouraged.
Maybe someone ought to write him (or perhaps Jimmy Saville) a letter …
19 January 2011 at 12:49 am #56005Well said Andy, we’re definately at our best when we look to attack sides, those games you mentioned and some spells of other games have shown this. Attacking in a patient manner doesn’t seem to suit us, we seem to be far better when we move the ball at pace.
19 January 2011 at 1:22 am #56007To be fair, we’re not good enough to always dictate the pace of attack. If teams sit back, we don’t have the guile to break them down at will. It is at those times that we are accused of negative, sideways, backward passing. But at least we are retaining possession and making the opposition work.
My only beef is that we don’t try often enough to do something different which can make us predictable and easy to play against.
Not that the tactic employed for our goal on Saturday will always be the answer; rarely will that lead to an incompetent defended and goalkeeper letting your striker pass it into the goal. And 8 times out of 10, Hugo would have missed ;)
I find it fascinating – and sometimes heart stopping – watching them try to play this way. It’s like Bambi on Ice at times.
Just my opinion, and before all you class 1, tactical genius’s out there come on to slag it off – I don’t care!

“But at least we are ….. making the opposition work.”
are you sure???????? My impression is that the opposition tend to sit back & simply wait for us to give away possession with a sloppy misplaced pass
For what its worth, I think Bobby’s slow, patient style of play may well be a work if a) he had the quality of players to do it against the quality of opposition we face every week & b) if there was any sort of movement off the ball from the players not in possession. The 2 may well be linked
He doesn’t & so, in my eyes, should try & implement a system that suits the players he has as opposed to square pages in round holes etc……Far from finding it fascinating watching players continually @r$ing up a style of play to which they are quite clearly not suited & a manager unwilling to see what’s staring him in the face I find it frustrating & annoying
I did see that bit where you mentioned not being @r$ed about what us tactical geniuses think, but I couldn’t be @r$ed paying any attention to it!!! ;)

Possibly, but I don’t think that’s a deliberate ploy, obviously. I think the intention is clearly be to move it about quicker but we aren’t good enough to do it yet. We’re not in the bottom three for nothing, are we.So, yes it is easier for the opposition to contain sometimes, I agree.

I have said many times I would like to see us just give it a go from the start of the game for a change and see what happens.
19 January 2011 at 2:07 pm #56024If he is to stick with this style of play then the problem isn’t the lack of strikers but the midfield. In my opinion and I state my opinion ( disclaimer Griff !! ) non of the current midfield are up to the task. Diame is the best of a bad bunch and Watson is the worst for the style of play Bob desires ! As for the defence, well Bob needs to bring in a decent defensive coach because our defense are constantly caught out in all departments. Figs and Stam when played at right and left back respectfully are nothing short of dire !! Alcaraz blows hot and cold and Caldwell is simply bereft of any pace !! Where is Boyce ? Is he injured ? The keeper’s all right though !! We dont seem to making it happen in the buying department though ??? If he goes elsewhere it will be unforgivable !!

Agree with that. It’s their mobility and speed of thought that is lacking in my view. But that’s what the difference between £20k a week and £40k a week gets you.
