1. If your gonna complain about Roberto’s prefered formation then please stop calling it 4-5-1. He plays 4-3-3. It may not seem like that but that is his intention. All the people who attended the Forum in Nov/Dec last year will back that up.
It isn’t working, we all know that but i like the idea of a 4-3-3 formation. Hopefully with more options upfront it could well work.
2. Why i dont want Martinez to go and why i will defend him no matter how sh*t the performances are.
Simple, because he was an Idol for a 14 year old lad. I want him to succeed so much that i’m prepared to go through hell to hopefully one day see it.

4 February 2010 at 5:32 pm #21358I agree.
When I saw Roberto’s tactics for the first time, at PNE in that friendly, I noticed that we played a game that adapted whether we were in possession of the ball, or not. 4-3-3 with the ball, 4-5-1 without.
In possession, the full backs would push up, level with the midfield. If we lost possession, they dropped back to normal positions. We also had a midfield that were swapping roles with each other. All of this is basically what Chelsea do.But for whatever reason, we haven’t been doing it.
4 February 2010 at 6:04 pm #21359If he’s going to play 4-3-3, I’m a traditionalist and would rather see players on the correct wings i.e Zog on left. Players cutting in all the time are easy to defend against. People on here have told me why he plays so narrow by having people on wrong wings but I don’t think we’ve got good enough players to play through the middle in this way, and our full backs don’t get up enough to generate the width.
If the “wide” men in the 4-3-3 played on the correct wings, the defenders would be stretched wider, also creating space for the likes of McCarthy/Scharner/Gomez to run into through the middle. Old fashioned, but it tends to work – e.g Spurs when they beat us 9-1.
4 February 2010 at 6:18 pm #21361What I’ve noticed recently (inparticular Man U away & Hull at home) is that when they give away possession in an attacking position, Latics can have as many as 5 players (centre forward, right sided attacker/winger, left sided attacker/winger, the “in the hole” player & the more attackign central midfielder) making no attempt to get back behind the ball
And its happening time & time again, game after game
So whatever formation Bobby is trying to play doesn’t appear to be working yet he is persisting with it. As i said several months ago, how many times does someone have to stick their hand in a fire before they realise that it burns?4 February 2010 at 6:55 pm #21365Great post.Shame we dont get points in the League for backpatting each other about sticking up for lame 4ss bobby. Out of his depth, out of ideas and soon to be out of the premier league and job.

Unlike you i dont just crave for points in the league. If i ever got like that then i’d probably give up going. Winning is just an added bonus of watching this football club.
5 February 2010 at 12:57 am #21457I don’t mind losing. It happens. But in 45 years of watching Wigan I can’t recall quite so many public humiliations. 9-1 v Spurs, 0-2 v County ( and I work in Nottingham !! ) plus several 4 and 5 0 hammerings. Surely this doesn’t need to continue. A few tweaks could make a real difference – b ut there’s few signs that RM can provide them.

And our defence is cack.
5 February 2010 at 7:42 pm #21642I’d say Roberto’s formation is more of a 4-2-3-1 than a 4-3-3. I see similarities between Roberto and Benitez in their tactics. Could just be a spanish thing
