5 August 2010 at 5:53 pm #41730I’ll take this one up Griff
I didn’t go last night, have never booed Gomez & don’t agree with thos that do including last night HOWEVER there is no way in a million years that he is good enough for the top flight in England & I don’t think he will be in a million years
That opinion doesn’t mean I know nothing its just what I believe from having watched him over these last 12 months
I understand what you’re saying about him getting slaughtered for doing one thing yet when someone else does it they’re applauded coz I used to feel the same way about the abuse Teale got as opposed to the saint like worship McCulloch got. But IMO his good bits are too few and far between & just like you knew Koumas “could” produce somet decent but rarely did its the same with Gomez.
Personally I think people transfer the abuse they feel too guilty to chuck at Bobby (Latics legend, loves the club etc…) on to his signings & Gomez (along with Scotland) were (no matter what he may say now) his 2 flagship signings upon taking over & they’ve been really poor buysFair comments but, as you say, it’s all about opinions and, in mine, I don’t think he is as bad as portrayed by the majority.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s no Lionel Messi – christ, he’s probably not even Jason Koumas, I agree – but I see no-one else in our current squad who has anything more of the creative spark required (from the centre of the pitch not from the right-wing) to unlock defences.
My beef, as usual, is not with those who disagree with me, rather with those neanderthals who jump on his back for no better reason than that it seems fashionable and when pressed as to state what is wrong with him can offer nothing more constructuve than because “he’s f******* shyte”.
5 August 2010 at 5:54 pm #41731I don’t, if he’s not good enough he deserves to be criticised.[/quote]
Criticised, yes. Totally and utterley ruined for everything he does? Behave yourself. If you think Gomez is that bad a footballer you know nothing.
I saw Rodallega applauded for taking a ball to feet, running back towards our goal for 10 yards before passing back to the centre-back. 2 minutes earlier, under considerably more pressure, Gomez did the same thing and was slaughtered.
That’s not rational football fans. that’s a mob whoi have decided they want somebody out and no matter what he does – like the little dinked ball into the penalty spot late on that no-one else in the team could/would have spotted – he will get the full dog’s abuse.
Granted, he can be frustrating and ineffectual at times, but who can’t? no way is he as bad a footballer as some make out. We aren’t exactly Barcelona without him, are we?
Exactly, I think he should be criticised not booed.

Thanks for that. I’ve just taken a quid off the lad next to me as I bet him that would be the first response back.
I’ll set ’em up, you knock ’em down.
5 August 2010 at 6:28 pm #41737Once a player gets the boo boys on his back it is very difficult , no matter what he does ,to get them off.
In the last game of last season aginst Hull , I thought Gomez had a half decent game. He actually showed some nice touches. There was one moment where he played the striker ( Moreno ? ) into a goal scoring position. It was a ball many players wouldn’t have even seen , let alone tried. However in the last 10 minutes or so he seemed to tire and made a few mistakes. Immediately everything that he’d done before was forgotten & it was ” you’re f…..g s…e Gomez ” time again !!!
I don’t think we’ll be seeing too much of him this season so the boo boys will have to target someone else.
And they will. :(
5 August 2010 at 9:13 pm #41742I sat in the East Stand for a change last night. I thought they were meant to be our best and most passionate fans. One bloke behind me had a go at Gomez for not challenging the centre half hard enough to win a header. It would have been a bit tricky seeing as it was Gomez who actually put the cross in.
6 August 2010 at 1:11 am #41754i’ve never booed any of our players, but i get my season ticket and criticise who i like!Gomez is not up to the standard and never will be.Maybe he was ok in the fizzy pop league or what ever its called now but not in the prem. Also thought last nites game wasn’t bad we can only get better!

Where are your spaces after full-stops? Boo, boo, gerr-off eirelatic.
6 August 2010 at 11:22 am #41763Exactly, I think he should be criticised not booed. Can we get someting straight here. When we talk about booing, we use it in a generic way. It of course includes the physical act of booing, plus audible groans every time the ball looks like going near the object of said ‘booing’ and shouts of “F**** off back to Swansea [insert name of booing object] you useless Spanish t***”.
My criticsim of players is generally confined to a reasoned debate about in the pub after the match. Admittedly, that’s something that many on here aren’t really up to.
6 August 2010 at 12:06 pm #41766Where I was sat in the East (on Wed) – there was not alot of booing, abuse yes
Also I found alot of head in hands, shaking of heads and it even got to the stage of laughing in a mocking way especially when G tried a shot and it went for a throw in
After the throw in shot, fans around me were opening taking the p..s laughing and mocking – a different style of abuse
