Wigan Athletic Under 18s travel to Rochdale’s Spotland Stadium this afternoon to take on their hosts in the Lancashire FA Youth Cup final at 2pm.

Latics progressed to the final courtesy of a 6-5 penalty shootout victory against Preston North End on Saturday morning, with Ryan Meadows converting the winning spot kick, after 1-1 draw in 90 minutes with Sam Cosgrove on the score sheet.

The LFA Youth Cup campaign began back in October when Latics beat Fleetwood Town 2-0 at Christopher Park in the first round.

Latics played their quarter final tie with Tranmere Rovers away at Raby Vale last month, winning 2-1 with Christian Mather’s curling effort from the edge of the area the winning goal.

Rochdale’s road to the final included victories over Bury, Burnley and local rivals Oldham Athletic.

FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that

Hell fire. So much for our academy plans. Five nil against a club of that stature can’t spell promise for the future!

        That’s a tad unfair.

A work colleague’s lad plays for the the under 14’s and he tells me they have a fairly good set up for a small club.

Given our investment in youth and the number of people paid as staff I find it difficult to believe Rochdale with crowds of 2k can compete with us for the best kids in the area. Perhaps I’m being unfair but its hardly impressive!
