Did anyone notice last night that when we hoofed it forward we caused them more problems than when we tried to play it through the middle ! Route one ugly stuff can get you points whereas dicking around passing the ball backwards and sideways for possession sake gets you fuck all in the way of goalmouth action !!

Be sure you pass that nugget of information on to Wenger and Guardiola.

Wengers lot have passed themselves to death and in recent times and their achievements are zip.Passed Bolton and Stoke in to oblivion last season and lost them both.Football has simple objective “ball into net “.On that count we fail miserably. If we can win sexy all the better but we cant ,so doesn’t that correlate to Robbies short sightedness .If i want to watch us play triangles with nothing at the end i’ll go watch them pass it round cones in training.Robbies Wigan history seems to severely cloud peoples judgements.I wonder if this had been S Bruce at the helm whether they would be so understanding.??

It’s got f-all to do with Roberto’s playing history.

Phil just made a monumental howler in stating that hoof the ball forwards up the middle will get you more chances than the passing game – and that what I have picked up on.

On this basis, Stoke should be top four at least, and Arsenal should be bottom half.

The commentator on Sky made a good point last night that “it’s almost as if it’s (the long ball) a pass that they’re not allowed to make & as a result they end up putting themselves under more pressure (by getting caught in possession). There are times when you need to knock it long to see what you can get from the knockdown & to relieve the pressure on your midfield & defence”

That was during the horrendous spell from just after they scored until just before half time

All in moderation Tyldesley – that’s the key.

I can’t stand watching long ball, but on occasion it is needed and can be effective. Do it too often and it becomes as ineffective as passing the ball around for the sake of passing.

          (a) sometimes when we by-pass midfield all together we do create some problems, but nobody really wants 90 minutes of long ball

          (b) on the odd occassion when we move the ball quickly through midfield we look quite dangerous – this, i believe, is what we all enjoy

          (c) often the ball goes into midfield but the first instinct of the receiver, it would seem, is to pass it back to where it came from – we retain possession but the opposition has time to get behind the ball and then we are simply not good enough to walk it into the net through a guarded defence in the way that the likes of Man U or Arsenal can do; young (small) Albert Crusat particularly (disappointingly) seemed prone to going backwards last night

          (d) a good proportion of our short free kicks and corners not only don’t create anything but put actually us under needless pressure

so, a mixture of mainly (b) with portions of (c) and (a) required, giving (d) a wide a berth other than when it is safe to do so

It is about mixing it up & that’s the point, Latics don’t and it’s all too predictable & pedestrian. Actually its not just about mixing it up either its about knowing what type of play the opposition is vulnerable to & choosing the right ball at the right time – if that right ball always happens to be a long ball into the corner all game long then so be it.
martinez made some gobbledegook comment last night about it not being about the results but about the performances coz that brings the results & he was referring to the players being too nervous about getting points on the board to play the right way. I’m only an outsider looking in obviously but to me it seems that most of the time the problem isn’t that but is about the players being too concerned about doing things Bobby’s way (playing out of the back etc..) that they ignore their instincts (e.g. leather it out of the back when under pressure or looking for the runner & short ball instead of knocking it long into space for someone to run on to) & wind up either flapping, getting caught in two minds or taking the more difficult option & fecking it up. You can’t tell me that it’s ever been Gary Caldwell’s instinct as a centre half to bring the ball under control & attempt to pass his way out of trouble!!
It’s all very laudable of Bobby to try & play football the “right way” but by being (by his own admission) so stubborn that it is thr right way he can’t see what’s staring him in the face half the time

Andyc makes a good point about the free kicks – there was one in the first half last night where it was screaming out for a long diagonal ball into the box & look for the knock down. Latics waited till all the City players got behind the ball & knocked it back into their own half (it was the point that the boos rang out) & put em under pressure.
There was another free kick not long afterwards in a not too disimilar position to the one which City scored from. Again it was screaming out for the same type of delivery so it has the possibility of stranding the keeper &/or making any sort of flick on potentially dangerous to City. What did Latics do? Put it in with the opposite type of curl on it meaning that he delivery has to be pin point & the connection with it true to make it any sort of danger to the goal & they got neither.

I think you’ve pretty much nailed it there Andy. I’d also like to see an (e) option which Tyldesley alluded to.

            (e) Stop fannying around on the edge of our own box.

There is a time and a place – when you’re under the cosh against the likes of City or Liverpool with Aguerro and Suarez in the vicinity and on an increasingly more rutted pitch – that isn’t it.

Unfortunately for Martinez, he doesn’t have the luxury of having players like Wenger and Guardiola have and have had, players that can pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, KILL.

Gotta admire him for trying though. Just needs to convey to players that there’s sometimes another option other than facing their own goal and passing when they receive the ball – er, going forwards and passing

Some good replies there ! For the record I never mentioned hoofing the ball up the middle ! I was trying to say that when we hoofed it forward we had them more rattled than when we tried to pass our way through the middle ( third ) !
