Ok so you have a strong case against Whelan and Martinez. What are your options? What do we do next then?
Am interested to see them.
26 January 2011 at 11:59 am #56914They’ll be asking for Bill Gates and Mourinho, and they still won’t be happy!
26 January 2011 at 12:18 pm #56923Can we have Bill Gates and Mourinho? Then ill be happy.
26 January 2011 at 12:20 pm #56926Unfortunately Mr Aff your life is doomed to be a long circle of endless, monotonous misery
26 January 2011 at 12:52 pm #56932Not saying we’d get any of these but if you don’t ask then you don’t get:
Sam Allardyce
Martin O’Neill
Martin Jol
Avram GrantThat’s just off the top of my head – I reckon there’s probably at least half a dozen Championship managers who could do a better job as well
26 January 2011 at 12:55 pm #56933Cue the ‘anyone but Martinez and Whelan’ post….
26 January 2011 at 1:16 pm #56937I doubt Bill Gates has his coaching badges though.
Would it make a difference if we changed the manager now? Still the same players which are all criticised !

You know full well none of those managers would come to Wigan, nor could we afford any of them. I’m surprise you’ve even mentioned them. I’d have expected it from bicky but not you!
Also, Avram Grant? Are you serious? At Portsmouth he was known as BBC (bibs, balls, and cones). He inherited a team at Chelsea, took Portsmouth down, and is on the verge of taking West Ham down.
How do you know a Championship manager would do any better. They’ve either never managed in this league or haven’t exactly set the world alight. Remember, Martinez was a highly rated Championship Manager when he joined Wigan.
26 January 2011 at 1:37 pm #56943given that at the moment, the chance of us successfully bribing the other teams or a miracle happening are pretty slim, as a new member of the darkside, it looks like we are going to have to start to accept that we have to prepare for next season and the next few after that.
We arent going to turn this season around. Of the teams we still have to play, we took 11 points off them in the fixtures earlier this season from 42 (2W, 5D) and that included a few suprises we are unlikely to repeat.
We are going to have to build – and that means getting rid of a lot of dead wood. Since we were promoted, there is more dead than green.
Start with Martinez, Jones and Barrow, then those who we wont be able to afford to pay with championship gates and parachute money and those who are looking to leave anyway and those who are just not pulling their weight…
…that leaves about four players.
I dont want players playing for us in the championship who couldnt be arsed in the premiership
26 January 2011 at 1:46 pm #56945Played well last night I thought, never gave up played with a bit more attacking intent than previous games. There is no manager in the world that do anything when 1 of your players needlesly gives away a stupid foul like Thomas.
Lets start getting behind the team, there seems to be too many people going to games just to moan, why?
Good result at b@lt@n saturday could kickstart adecent run, UP THE TICS.26 January 2011 at 2:06 pm #56948Standish, Allardyce would jump at the chance to come here, He would do anything to stay in the area. He was interested in Burnley a few weeks ago.
Chairman. Anyone who isnt obsessed with lying and creaming money. You dont have to be mega rich to run a club, Just have half a brain with finances. Not like Whelan. He makes up stories because he knows the fans will believe them about saving them e.t.c

He was interested in Burnley a few weeks ago.Who told you he wanted to go to Burnley? He was linked with the job in the paper, like he is with every other job – but that’s the press, not Allardyce himself. If he’d have wanted the job, he’d have taken the job. He didn’t even go for an interview, and never even approached them.
Whelan wouldn’t pay his wages, and there’s no money for players – which was one of his big fall outs with Gartside at Bolton.

So Whelan didn’t bail the club out? So you don’t need a substantial amount of millions to merely buy the club in the first place?
If you were not as rich as Whelan, but more intelligent, and you owned the club, how would that be of benefit? The club does not make money – it loses money, or remains solvent at best. Other than selling players – the current policy – how would you generate any money to improve things?
You can be realitively wealthy and own a football club, but not a small club like Wigan Athletic if you want to remain in the top two divisions of football.
26 January 2011 at 3:31 pm #56961Do we need an alternative, they could’nt be worse than these two comediens…….

Standish, as you’ve said to somebody later on in this thread about Allardyce – How do you know??
In reality you have no more idea whether any of those would turn the job down than I have any idea whether they would accept the job
Likewise just coz I don’t know for certain that some of the succesful Championship managers could do a better job than Bobby doesn’t mean for certain that you know that they couldn’tIn terms of not being able to afford any of them I wouldn’t be so sure. I think Whelan has been quite generous towards his last few managers – we’ve paid the sort of compensation to both Birmingham & Swansea that I’ve seen very few (if any) clubs pay to others when they’ve nabbed their managers. I would also assume that Bruce was on a pretty decent wage at Brum & would only have left there (even with all that ownership malarky at the time) if he was offered a pay increase.
You also don’t know what any of them are likely to ask for, any more than I doI also forgot to chuck Roy Hodgson in so I’ll do that now
As for what Avram Grant was called at Pompey, I don’t really care to be honest – there are a few nicknames that people know Bobby by too
