Refreshingly, Whelan is not a devotee of importing talent. “What I don’t want to do is find money for foreign players who come here with the attitude of, ‘I want the money’. They bring great skills but they have also taken a hell of a lot of money out of our game, and some of them haven’t given value for money. What you get from most home-grown players is effort, and some of the foreign lads don’t give 100 per cent. Not all, but some.”

While acknowledging that Sam Allar-dyce has manufactured a successful side out of imports and loans at Bolton, Whelan claimed: “Sam has been brilliant. He has had a go. He has done deals, and while some have worked for him, others have been a complete waste of time. Who wants to watch foreigners every week? I don’t mind one or two, but not seven or eight. There should be a limit on foreign players, and if we get up I want to sign good young Brits where I can.”
What happened Dave ? Full proof of another deceitful lie !

Or, things change and Whelan has realised that actually bringing in young, cheap British talent is a pipe dream, doesn’t work and he has changed his policy accordingly. Bringing in youg, cheap central Americans is the way to go. Until they wise-up too and club scouts move on to the next big untapped market, which will probably be the Middle East.

That’s not a lie. Anyone who has the same business policy and strategy in 2009 that he had in 2005 is likely to fail.

I personally dont believe a word that comes out of his mouth. You can defend him Griff and what you say about the independent quote does make sense but why come out with patriotic crap like that in the first place ? The Prem was already a hot bed for foreign imports and he was just being plain stupid coming out with that. It is like his sanctimonious rant on TV about the national side getting a foreign manager, next thing ya know he has got one in for us ! Then he is on TV again and its all over the papers ” Lee Cattermole is definitely NOT FOR SALE ” Next thing ya know he has gone ! I truly think now that this club is collapsing from within and players are jumping ship, ie Brown, Figueroa and also the aforementioned Cattermole ! There are too many people still looking up to him for his past endeavors to the club but as you just quoted Griff things can change in 5yrs and in my opinion Whelan has changed for the worse ! I am not green or stupid not to know that the sale of Springfield Park lined his pockets handsomely and that deep down he is looking after No.1 and ya cant blame him , most of em are but he is making a mockery out of this club now and it is time he moved on to pastures greener because if you cant see whats happening Griff, I can ! I haven’t jumped on a “Whelan out” bandwagon, I have observed certain things and formed a totally lucid opinion of him and everybody is entitled to their respective opinions on here so I am merely sharing mine ! Some will no doubt lambaste me while others will agree !

The man is stubborn, sanctimonious, an undoubted liar and a media-whore who makes me cringe every time he appears on TV or in the papers and is bobbins trombone player. But so is Simon Cowell.

I would have absolutley no problem if he moved on, but to be replaced by who? And what guarantees do we have that the next guy would be any different. Personally, and I am coming from the perspective of a fan of the club, I think that on balance, he has done more good than harm to this club.

As for the Cattermole thing, that happens all the time. Look at Lescott. If a player wants to go he will go. The Chairman’s job in that scenario is to get the best price possible and saying he is not for sale at any price is a standard negotiating tactic.

Regarding Whelan…don’t agree with everything but without him we wouldn’t have a team.

Regarding transfers…as per Griff if folk want to go not a lot you can do but wave them off and get as much dosh as yer can.

Idiotic thing for him to say in the first place, but typical Whelan. He was right though, I’d rather watch English (preferably local lads) fighting for the badge than some of the mercenary twonks we’ve had in the last few years. Doesn’t always guarantee success though

So 5 years in The English Premier League and possibly being the only club in there without massive debt doesn’t count as success??

Carry on as you are Mr Whelan, these guys have obviously forgot where we have come from and who we are!!

I’ve never read as much absolute shoite in my life as i have done over the past week or so on here. We are 3 games into the season with a new manager and virtually new team for christ sake.
Did any of you really expect 9 points on the board by now??
              Yeah, thought so!!!

It’s going to take another 10 games or so until we start seeing what Roberto is trying to do i’m afraid. Hope some of you don’t have too many sharp objects kicking about at home!!!!

                  Top post Appley..

3 games in – more points than Everton and the same points as Liverpool – and we have played 2 of the top 6 from last season..

…no, your right Bob, we should have won the F.A. cup by now

                  …..bloody rubbish Wigan….Not coming again me ;)

Funny isnt it, some fans thinking we should be able to compete with a championships reserve side. Conceding 9 goals in two games, whats the problem in that? Any way, win our next few games and everything will be fine and we will be shooting up the league. Everton, West Ham, Arsenal then Chelsea, with the quality play, quality players, Graham Barrows coaching and vast experience we have, we should be at least mid table by November.

i am going to copy and paste something i have posted on the waterstones book signing thread that you seem not to have seen or chosen to ignore thtyoneyearswafc about david whelans motives,so read it and tell me hes still our saviour.

David Whelan CHOSE to do all those things,we as fans did not ask him,he gave with one hand and now seems to be taking back with the other.
lets examine mr whelans motives and what it actually cost him.

Many of you on here, those who seem to be in the “whelan can do no wrong camp” keep saying how much it cost him, others accuse his critics of having no business sense well i am now going to say something that some of you will not agree with.

                      IT COST HIM NOTHING

                      why you may ask ?

It costs up to £50,000+ for a 30 second tv advert, but these have to be bought in groups, peak and off peak and this 50k is the tip of the iceberg, this figure does not include any of the production fees,
well all the way through the latics meteoric rise JJB had more free advertising airtime than a company of its size could ever wish for,
they even managed to get FREE airtime on the BBC,nigh on impossible seeing as the beeb dont do commercial adverts,
Latics never EVER got a mention without a link to whelan himself or JJB plc. in particular.
This was a marriage of two organisations that was a marketing company’s dream come true, and for a man who seems to crave publicity and a media attention as much as he does it was priceless.

I suggest that mr whelans motives for ‘investing’ in wigan athletic were the same as the reasons he gave for ‘not investing’ in manchester united, every football fan in the lower leagues wanted their own david whelan and instantly recognised his company.
Now that the need for the ‘marriage’ is no longer required, or latics are not part of his long term business outlook, disposal is very high on his agenda.
