The chairman has recently commented about this season and that it will be another relegation battle. Tell us something we didnt know Dave.
What is this competition all about then? Is it simply as we have thought for a long time now, get the 8 or 9 wins and some draws then collect the money as we pass go.This money is then dished out to a bunch of mercenary players and again no progress.
Please let’s at least make the season a little interesting by at least making an effort in the FA Cup. Dont think so, these overpaid mercenaries will get a day off then.

I have to admit it’s getting more and more frustrating. We seem to act like a newly promoted club. Every season we take the money and see how it goes, running the risk of relegation with no plans or proper investment to improve.
Bob says he wants to do well in the cups, then makes 9 changes against Palace. That said, a PL second eleven should be able to beat Palace, but then again most of our first eleven are not PL standard anyway.
It will catch up with us sooner or later and who knows where we will end up, we might even start enjoying football again when it happens.

selling star players ,bringing in crap is not what fans at any club want
fact is he owd silver yed is stuck with the club as no one is interested in taking it off him
six games in and he hoists the white flag
good confidence boost for the fans :angry-banghead:

Just wondering if the comments you refer to are the one’s Whelan made in the papers recently.

                [link2:12q5xel5]Truth,http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereveningnews/sport/football/wigan_athletic/s/1459864_wigan-athletic-face-spectre-of-battle-for–survival%5B/link2:12q5xel5%5D

Its the reporter here who mentions relegation, Whelan doesn’t actually mention that, but states that the season will be tough as the premier league gets stronger every year and that this year will be another battle.

He praises Bob’s efforts in trying to play the right way and is being as positive as he can be with the money and players we have.

With the next seven games being against Villa, Bolton, Newcastle, Fulham, Wolves, Blackburn and Sunderland maybe we should reserve judgement until these are over before evaluating Bob’s future. As for Dave Whelan, his money is looking like peanuts in todays market and he is doing the best he can with resources in my opinion.

in any case, why should dave whelan give (any more of) his hard earned money to wigan athletic?

most of the town don’t give a stuff and a good proportion of our ‘supporters’ don’t even go to games (any more)

whelan insists that we have to balance the books and i for one don’t blame him

Have you thought why this is?
It might just be something to do with the facts that have been stated.

We are in our seventh season now, and we don’t appear to be any better a position than we were after the first season.

I know we haven’t got a god given right to be successful and as a club we are probably a division or so higher than we should be, but by now we should be at least looking to aim higher than 17th.

I haven’t written us off just yet, but if we don’t get a few wins and draws from the matches mentioned above then I will start to get worried.

The 12 – 14k fan base seems to be pretty stable, it will take a generation of new fans coming through to grow the club properly. The novelty factor of promotion to the premiership brought in new fans, but a combination of failure to perform on the big games (Cheers PJ !) and the recession meant a lot of fans stayed away.

It is hard to increase a fan base when you only win 10 games a season.

Horc i do believe you have just summed up the frustration within our club and between our fans in a nut shell. That was the post that people have been trying to say.

Well worded old chap

But with Whelan not pumping any more money in (and as AndyC has said, why should he?) it’s very difficult to see how we can have any realistic ambition of regularly finishing much higher than that. I’m sure the club would like to, but the money just isn’t there to compete with many other clubs and achieve it.

It is frustrating seeing us lose more than we win, but I think there has been an inevitability about it now for a good few seasons; about 6 and a bit, to be exact.
