I know damn well that someone as high profile as Beckham wouldn’t sign but we’ve managed to sign players like Heskey and Melchiot so there must be a well known name somewhere that would sign in a bid to put bums on seats.

Garswood, rate Michu next season. Plenty players have taken the league by storm before flopping like a fish.

But Heskey and Melchiot weren’t marquee signings who put bums on seats.

Both were freebie misfits who had been booed when they had played for Birmingham, and who were considered to be well past their best. We had no Premier League competition for either signing, and I clearly remember people posting things like ‘Hope it’s not true’ on Cockney Latic and other clubs’ fans taking the mickey when the Heskey rumour first appeared.

There will be proven Premier League players out there who’ll sign for us, but I’m guessing they’ll be more David Jones than the type of player to have ‘em flocking through the turnstiles.

It might change in ten years time if we can stay in the Premier League, but for now I feel that’s the reality of it.

Probably right yes. I’d like to see us give a big name signing a go though as opposed to constantly signing players you’ve never heard of who fail miserably.

I think we need more British players in the squad, because, at the risk of sound jingoistic, they seem more motivated on a cold, miserable winter’s night, or when we go a goal down.

The problem is however, British players are expensive, and there’s not that many about who are affordable and who would fit our style of play.

Boselli didnt come cheap at 6 million last time i looked he was not british. How about going for the poor mans Beckham,David Bentley, he must be better than boozeyjo,

Not at crossing with his left foot I think “boozejo” takes that one.

Not a bad shout as a RWB though.

not leftsided i know, just making a comparision with boozeyjoe,he would hopefully put in decent crosses, something which boozey in my opinion does not

There’s a reason why Bentley is in Russia, ie his £60k+ per week wages. Not a chance he will come here or indeed be offered that kind of money here.

Ffs lets just not bother all together…

If it was up to me I would play Boselli and henriquez up front with Maloney every week.

we all know the way we have to operate as a club and the chances of us signing the likes of Beckham and Bentley etc are slim to none.

But for me getting some crosses on from that right side is essential to us.

I trust Roberto and if he can sign someone from Spain, pick someone up from asdas car park, spiritually heal stams right foot or do anything to improve that I am sure he will whatever the options available.

I don’t think we will be relegated (not that I would be arsed if we did) and with a bit of luck I think we may get a little cup run too.

        Believe.

He as returned to spurs, and yes you are right, his big money pay days are long gone, clubs in the prem will not touch him for crazy money, so he needs to lower his sights a little.

As we appear to be playing fantasy football on this thread, how about Darren Bent? OK, so Villa paid 20m for him just a year or so ago, but he ain’t playing and is clearly not in favour.
“Drop your wages, come to Wigan and resurrect your England career just like Heskey did then we’ll sell you on again for a last big move.”

As daft as it sounds, we need this type of marquee signing. Think how many shirts we would sell with a name like Beckham on the back. Those extra ticket sales. The extra publicity. The wages wouldn’t be an issue.

Yes its daft and never going to happen.

Speaking to my Dad on the way home from the game on Saturday I said something similar about a striker. Why do we constantly take risk after risk on 3 or 4 million players with no PL experience when we could spend 8 on a proven scorer at this level? We’ve made a profit this year and have 60m on the way if we survive. We need to ask ourselves whether we ever want to move to the next level (which can be done without going bankrupt) or stay on a shoe string and hope we survive year after year.

I agree the skinflint permanent transitional period we have had for the past four years isn’t working and I think it will prove the undoing this season.
unless they have something up their sleeves I see more defeats and a damp squib of a finale with this lot we have in now.
Roberto has done a smashing job on a threadbare budget but we have more defeats than anyone else (surely the most we have ever had at the same stage in the EPL?) and the pledge to take us up a level hasn’t Happened although the injuries at the back have cost us dear this year.Judging by the interest in the MACC game it seems most people are sick of this league anyway and this wil probably be one battle too many .
As for Beckham in my view he’s finished as a footballer at the highest level and im sick of reading rubbish about how he’s joining this club or that -like he has a choice?

Okay Phil/Egg, I’ll step up to the mark with my opinion:

If we filled the stadium every week we’d still only generate an extra £3 million – ish.

Forget the Beckham scenario. He’s unique and it would never happen for us in whatever circumstances you could ever possibly think up.

So, let’s say it’s another less prominent marquee signing. For starters, you wouldn’t have much change from the £3 million after covering his wage demands, so that means we’d have to get him to sign on the cheap – because the most you could expect from sponsorship would be an extra couple of million, and no matter who you have on the back of a Wigan shirt, if it’s not Beckham, Messi or Ronaldo, their sales aren’t going to generate enough money to cover his signing.

Then you’d have to convince this international superstar that moving to Wigan would be a good move for him – considering we’d be competing with every other Premier League club for his signature, with most of them not being located in a working class ex-coal mining town.

Simply: it won’t happen, and you’re back to bidding for a couple of players who are £3 million because they’re more likely to want to play for Wigan than one £7 or £8 million proven superstar.

I think this post sums it up nicely.

You did forget to mention the signing on fee that one of these “marquee players” would demand… which would be ridiculously high.

Once you’ve subtracted that from the extra £3 million mentioned – PLUS the wages – it’s not looking great.

If Beckham is going anywhere, I reckon it will be QPR, as he’s been ganging around there lately at games, and I can imagine Redknapp signing him. A ‘marquee’ signing to give them a boost in their relegation fight. And yes, I predict they WILL stay up. Apparently, they’ve also been viewing schools in West London as well.

Regarding Bentley, yes he has been on big wages in the past. But Reading are strongly linked with him and if we can’t compete with them, with all respect, then we really are in the wrong league.

NORTHERNPRIMATE- I like your attitude and comments about Darren Bent. He needs away from Villa, and if you don’t ask, you don’t get. And considering we paid a reported £50,000 a week for Heskey, yet another non-scoring forward (what is it with us?) I would definitely be keen.

The problem for me is not the players, but the style and formation we play. Is it really any coincidence that since Martinez came and implemented this ‘tic tac’ style, we have seen a number of forwards come and fail? I don’t think it is. I believe that Alan Shearer in his prime would have struggled with us playing this way. Seriously.
