Controversial when first appointed, with many comments (including a significant number here) talking about how he couldn’t manage a chippy – one that was placed well out of the way of any passing trade and would have taken a mammoth effort to even turn a profit. He has learnt well perversely as a result, that success has to be worked for, and sometimes you need to know when to quit, or in today’s situation, cut ties with the past.
I am really impressed with him. He has handled this well. I wanted, as I’m sure Sharpy wanted, for Gary to do well, to carry on last year’s roll. But it hasn’t happened. I’m afraid Gary has looked a bit stranded and like a fish out of the water, without the plan B that he always seemed to have last year. He has been hoist by the petard of his insistence that ONLY one up-front would work. I understood his rationale, but sometimes, just sometimes, you need to change the record.
But Sharpy has acted decisively before it’s too late. There is no ambiguity in the club notice. No “left by mutual agreement”. Sharpy has acted decisevley and sacked Gary.
I’m impressed by the Chairman. Let’s hope he now makes the right decision, ably assisted by Jonathan Jackson whose role I think is often understated, and gets the right man in.
