I know it’s early days yet and I like everyone else am positive with the early signs. Not trying to throw a dampener on things but is anyone else concerned about our defending? With Dan Burn injured is Alex Bruce the only back up centre half? I remember Martinez was accused of being clueless about defending but are the welcome addition of goals at the other end and exciting attacking play disguising the fact we’re vulnerable at the back especially from set pieces. Or is this the risk of playing the way we do and are we happy to concede some sloppy goals as long as we are scoring at the other end? Possibility Crouch could start tonight
22 August 2018 at 2:36 pm #171299I was away for the first game so saw us on saturday for the first time. Our two centre halves clearly haven’t formed a partnership yet, but that never clicks instantly. I felt on saturday that neither committed enough to win the first ball, and whilst neither of the goals came from that it did put me on edge.
22 August 2018 at 2:45 pm #171302West Brom have conceded 7 and they currently sit in 4th spot! As long as we score more goals then I’m not too concerned!
22 August 2018 at 4:08 pm #171304From what I’ve seen, the whole back line needs time to gel (including Walton) as a unit.
I also have some concerns about the defensive abilities of both James & Robinson at full back – I thought it when we played Wednesday & from seeing some of the goals on telly since then.
Take the first goal on Saturday, Latics were playing it out from the back & one of our centre halves had the ball – for me Robinson should have dropped close to the centre half to offer himself as an option, but not only did he not do that, he was in the opponents half meaning Morsy had to drop deep.
When Morsy messed up, Forest’s right winger bombed forward to offer himself as an option to the bloke in possession. Robinson not only didn’t pick him up but he didn’t even move.
His defending was also poor for during the build up to the penalty in injury timeNit picking I know but it is an area of concern & also one the Cook has alluded to in his post match comments from Saturday about “Jedi”
22 August 2018 at 4:50 pm #171305No other choice at left back but we have Byrne or Connolly at right back.
Only other choice at Centre back is Burn and Bruce. Just hope Dan gets fit soon and stays after January. Think he may as he isn’t anywhere near Greed league standard.22 August 2018 at 5:31 pm #171306Robinson is very good going forward but defensively he is quite poor. Both goals against Forest resulted from play down the left side.
He switches off and players go past him on the outside. If you look at Villa’s third goal he should have done better. Most clubs don’t just want a left back or right back now they want attacking wing back which weakens us defensively.
22 August 2018 at 7:51 pm #171309What’s wrong with a left or right back who runs up the field and overlaps with a left or right winger?
22 August 2018 at 8:32 pm #171310Sides don’t play traditional wingers either anymore Donny so the LB or RB are now classed as RWB and LWB I guess.
22 August 2018 at 9:50 pm #171312I know that Egg Mon, unfortunately that’s one problem with the game today.

23 August 2018 at 1:56 am #171314Defended ok tonight lads from the front.
23 August 2018 at 2:02 am #171318Funnily enough I thought both of them defended very well tonight & I noticed Robinson being nearer to the centre halves when Latics were playing it out from the back.
Neither of them were as good going forward though.
Why can’t we just have everything??!!
23 August 2018 at 2:17 am #171320Could I order a slice of humble pie please
23 August 2018 at 12:15 pm #171329As much as i loved the goals, i’m over the moon that we kept a clean sheet & away from home too, against a team who last season where 2 divisions above us. They played as a good solid unit last night despite the initial 20 minutes of stoke dominance. Onwards & upwards.
23 August 2018 at 1:11 pm #171331We only defended well because they switched to route 1 at 2 down. First 20 we were awful and had they scored we could have been looking at 3 or 4 against us instead.
Great away performance though in essence. Ride your luck, hit on the break and take your chances.
