Has anybody else thought that the way RM has our defence set up coupled with the play it out from the back tactics that it has put more strain on our defenders and added to our injury problems ?

I doubt it in terms of Ramis and Alcaraz because they’ve hardly touched the ball this season. Maybe with the likes of Beasajour and Figs with them having to get up and down the pitch a lot. The philosophy should help them really, in that, if we retain position there are less tackles to make and less overall defending.

Err, no! Passing a football puts strain and causes injuries???
My, oh my, there’s some drivel being spouted on here since last night.

No, I didn’t think that and still don’t. I don’t know how you come up with some of this, unbelieveable!
Gary Neville in his role as a ‘football expert’ on Sky stated that he went to a football coaching seminar recently and the way forward was that the top European clubs will be playing 2 at the back with 8 going forward – so a 2 – 8 system
He then stated that Wigan Athletic had been playing the system for sometime !!
Playing 2ish at the back requires top draw defenders + when it fails it’s the easiest system to play through. The difference between a good manager and a great manager they see the signs when it’s going wrong and they will react and take action if and when things start to go wrong , like the 15 minutes after the break Tuesday.
Martinez sometimes is pig headed for his own good, horses for courses I say.

Hats off to Bobby then
Looked like we played with two defenders last night. ;)
There was a lot of lunging and over stretching going on last night from the back line trying to either receive a short paced pass or trying to win the ball back after another fluffed sideways or backwards pass ! I just think that the back line put themselves under more pressure dicking about as some of us call it when a more direct ball played away from goal before some keen forward comes chasing it down would be the better option. Perhaps I should have elucidated more what I meant initially but Stam last night was a classic example of what can happen dicking about in ones own half. The tactics need to be basic and simple for defenders, not overcooking it by passing for passing sake. Let the midfield men do the passing and creating and keep the back line for good old fashioned basic defending, it is drilled into kids from an early age who aspire to be defenders what the basics are. Keep it simple !
Martinez is much more imaginative. He introduced 3-4-3 last season and has taken his tactics further forward this season.
He had very sophisticated tactics against Spurs. Wigan played a nominal 4-3-3 in possession and 3-5-2 when out of it. In addition, McCarthy successfully marked Gareth Bale.

There are only 5 teams in the Prem that have conceded less goals than Stoke, they may be extremely boring and unimaginative upfront but they are a fairly well oiled machine at the back !
i dont believe that we would be near the bottom three had alcaraz and ramis been fit all season.
there is absolutely nothing wrong with booting the ball back 50 yards into a channel every now and again for a striker to chase down, whislt giving your defence a chance to re-group.
the barca ticca takka football seems to have been overtaken by the german style of getting it forward a bit quicker, and the ‘good big un’ better than a ‘gud little un’ seems to be in fashion again….the german teams play the pressing fooball that we try to do, but when they get the ball it gets moved forward quicker, and not passed about for passings sake.
70% possesion and 0 goals in not better than 30% possesion and 1 goal.
