      …when Thomas was subbed??

Don’t know if anyboody else noticed, but when HT was subbed, Momo threw is arms in the air, started strutting about like a little kid who’d dropped his icy, shaking his head. I nudged my mate to tell him as I couldn’t work it out.
We both came to the conclusion that he must have thought, “shyte I’m going to have to put twice more tackles in now the “doctor” has gone off”. Very strange reaction indeed that was.

PS I like HT for his work ethic, but when is he going to make a positive pass forward?.

Sorry Griff for a bit of negativity, but this board at the moment is enough to wear anybody down.

Just one word springs to mind “fickle”….. nuff sed!!

Nowt wrong with a bit of reasoned criticism JR, even if, by definition, it’s likely to be appear negative.

For me, Thomas is just too defensive and when we have Diame playing that way too, then it leaves poor McCarthy running his nads off and the rest of the attacking unit (?) isolated.

Plus, he looks totally bewildered, as if he isn’t sure what he is really doing here. I’m sure he thinks he came over to work on the doors but joined the wrong queue :)

I cant work that one out – I didn’t see it myself.

You know, I think Momo is good going forward and I wish he did it more, he has those Patrick Viera legs which seem to just make it over someones foot or just squeezes in before the opposition gets the ball.

I like HT too and I agree, it would be nice to see him play a ball forward but he does go missing sometimes….

Basically when you look at it logically, we have a really good team BRASTING OUT somwhere, its just the formation and tactics that are lacking.

          goalie…awreet
full backs…awreet. [would have Boycie though at RB afore Mario]
centre halves…awreet [caldwell is looking the part every game, just need bromble back to how he was playing undert thelifont mon]
          Zog and Vic ont wing…awreet
Thirish scotsmon int middle ert park..awreet
          Momo along seed him…awreet
Rodders and Marcel or Scotland up front…. awreet

If he’d just gee it one motch fromt start see how it went wid aw bi happy.

aft to agree, when we moved to 442, we did look good….

isn’t it great being a Latics supporter :?

I didn’t see his reaction, maybe it was because he would have to play a bit deeper. Jrfatfan I agree we do have a decent side, once we click I think we will begin to pick up more points. A big positive for me is that apart from the game on Sunday we seem to have tightened up the defence.
On the notion of the formation I think that we can play 451, but only with Scharner in the midfield. He gives us some extra height, and it means that we could possibly play Hugo down the middle on his own, with Moses and N’Zogbia on the wings.
My only criticism from Sunday was our attacking play. Does anyone notice that Hugo and Charles try to do too much with the ball themselves rather than using other players and lose the ball when a simple ball is on. I don’t think it helps sometimes when the crowd gets on the players back when we lay the ball back into the midfield area and look to build some pressure.
I’m ever the optimist and I believe we can pick up 3 points at Birmingham. We have generally bounced back after poor results well, i.e the games against West Ham, Chelsea and Wolves when we have needed a win we have stepped up and hopefully they will on Saturday.

I’d have to disagree with this, Tini. Our midfield has little enough creativity as it is without putting Scharner in there. He proved on Sunday that his best position is centre-back. Gomez was clearly the one ear-marked for this creative role but has unfortunately failed to deliver.

As for Hugo up on his own, this has already been show not to work. He is made of teflon and not cut our for hold-up play.

As daft as it sounds, I think the only way that this 4-5-1 (or whatever) will work with our current squad is to:-

              a) play Scotland as the lone striker.
              b) ask the two defensive midfielders to be far less defensive :?

I too would use Moses andN’zogbia as the two wide midfielders which leaves no place for Hugo in this set-up. If we are to play him, then I think it needs to be in a 442 sacrificing one of Diame/Thomas (probably Thomas, as the poor little mite wouldn’t notice if you dropped him or not) and using Hugo and – assuming he settles in quickly – Moreno as the strikers.

Just my thoughts. Now, where did I put that tin hat?

If you watch the montage of Hugo’s goals on U Tube, the majority were scored from central positions (popping up in the box at the right time if you will )! He is not a back to goal type player but given the freedom of a more central attacking position I feel would reap more goals ! The wide berths could be taken up by Nzogbia and Moses and with McCarthy and Diame pushing forward I am sure Hugo could get into some decent channels with the 2 latter players backing him up. Moreno quite clearly is a sunshine and snooker baize pitch sort of player so he aint gonna fit in anywhere till end of April and May !!

I think he would struggle to get that freedom playing as a lone striker, if that is what you are suggesting. Playing offwith someone else would give him that licence perhaps.

He would have to rely on the 2 midfielders as we dont really have anyone who can act as a foil at the moment ! Since being moved onto the wing Hugo has not scored hardly any yet when he was more central he was scoring ! Surely that must tell the manager something ! It aint rocket science !

In theory, Hugo is wasted out wide as Filmoss said he scores the majority of the goals in a central position. Hugo is most effective when he has the freedom upfront but to I don’t think he can hold the ball up or win the majority of long balls played up to him. If he plays up front he can influence the game more. Have you noticed as well in the past couple of games at home games when we attack Moreno, Rodallega and N’Zogbia have been spaced apart with Hugo and N’Zogbia hogging the touchlines whilst Moreno was playing right down the middle. Maybe it could be an option to play them slightly closer together.
As for the point I raised before about Scharner, when he plays in midfield he helps win the majority of headers (unless hes up against a freak like Diop), we seem to always gift the opposition the ball when we play the ball long either from the goalkeeper or by just a long ball.
The players we have excite me, and we could be such a force if we can get it together.

It stands to reason that strikers would score more from a central position than out wide.

Bit of a contradiction that. But that’s exactly the problem for someone playing up there on his own. It’s a fairly thankless and selfless task. Rodallego needs to be given some freedom, I agree, but he can’t do that if he is the lone striker. Better he plays off someone else, in my opinion.

Yes, problem is we don’t have a Steven Gerrard to attack with Hugo
Nice to actually have some people you can speak about the team on here without clueless people posting rubbish. Are you going to Brimingham?

Tini, we actually have that type of player on our books, and his name is Jason Koumas. Unfortunately, he has the ability, but not the attitude to match.

Nah, I don’t do away games. I’ve only been watching Latics since 2003 when they got really, really good.
