Probably I am one of the strongest supporters of the lightside, but thinking about events at the end of the season, did Martinez give up on the league for the cup by resting Alcaraz for the Swansea game, putting everything into the cup final.
I for one will take the cup and relegation any day of the week, but it seems to have enhanced martinez reputation, given him an excuse to leave the club and added to his CV.
Just a thought.

29 May 2013 at 6:11 pm #114921I think it is true that Wigan did not have the resources to compete in both the cup and the league. Up to and including Everton, Martinez put out weakened teams – they might lose but would not be disgraced.
It would have been dispiriting to lose to Millwall at Wembley, though Martinez did play Al Habsi and Gomez and rest Robles and McArthur. Martinez then played his strongest available team in the final.
I don’t think Alcaraz was rested for the Swansea game. Caldwell played as the fittest of a long list of injured players.
29 May 2013 at 6:51 pm #114927He was going anyway, he just feels shiiter he couldn’t keep us up before firing off.
At least Jewell had the decency to let the chairman and fans know his intentions before the Sheff Utd game, “go down I stop”.Thanks for the Fa Cup well done , now feck off your greebo.

His statement about doing the best for Wigan Athletic, staying would have been for the best to stabalise the ship, he is leaving for his own reasons.

At 2-1 up he should have brought on Golobart to steady the ship. But I do think he chose to focus on the cup by not risking Alcaraz.

Jewell never told anybody his intentions to quit until after the Sheffield United game, before a game of that magnitude the media of it would only have provided a distraction and a hindrance for a massive game.
29 May 2013 at 9:48 pm #114950There was a long injury list! I know Golobart was on the bench, but if he had been fit, I’m sure he would have started! There wasn’t any conspiracy – Caldwell played out of necessity.
