Last season after 10 games we had just lost away at Fulham and were in the bottom 3, we had looked terrible and the players and Bruce got booed off. Come January everybody were dusting their passports down looking forward to Europe.
Along with us in the bottom 3 were Bolton and Spurs both 2 teams i didnt think would stay there and they didnt, Middlesboro were mid table.
Luckily this season there are worse teams than us and we will survive, but at least the second half of the season will be exciting and wont fizzle out like it did last season.
20 September 2009 at 12:50 pm #9230Scoffy mate,
I’m not bickering with you, but I’m afraid I don’t agree.
Are their REALLY worse teams than us? I’m not too sure. What I DO think, is that over the next few weeks, we will have a much better idea. By the start of November, we’ll have faced Hull, Burnley, and Portsmouth away. I think if we get to November, with less than 4 points at least, from those 3 games, we are in serious trouble, as I cannot for the life of me see us picking many points up against the likes of Spurs (who I predict will also do us about 4-0) Man City, and the rest. The most interesting game for obvious reasons will be Sunderland. But in all honesty, I can see them beating us.
The biggest worry for me, is the manner of the goals we are conceding. Very poor, indeed. Everybody’s been moaning the lack of another decent striker (which is correct), but I’m actually thinking that we should have gone the whole hog in the summer for someone like Wheater or Steven Taylor. Or even Richard Dunne. We are all over the place, and fact is, we never replaced the esperienced head of Matt Jackson. And don’t even get me started on lack of leadership in the side……..
20 September 2009 at 2:03 pm #9241I’m sorry, but Matt Jackson has been replaced as we have 3 centre halfs that are 10 times as good as him. Yes he is experienced and had a cool head. Both very important for a centre back. But what he didn’t have was pace. Him and De Zeeuw at the back were like watching a pair of snails when they came up against Henry, Agbonlahor etc. Bramble, Boyce and Scharner are all good enough to replace Jackson, and saying we haven’t replaced him is crazy. Jackson was good but he was never exactly John Terry was he?
I agree with scoffy that we should have spent big and got someone like Taylor or Dunne. But Big Dave won’t do that will he? No! That’s the only reason we got Bramble, because he was free!!
20 September 2009 at 4:17 pm #9258Are you disagreeing with me because it’s ME.
Or because you actually genuinely believe that?
I’m not after a ‘spat’ with you, honestly. But I’d like everybody else to consider the following statement.
“Boyce, Bramble, and Scharner, are ALL better than Matt Jackson was”.
Age and declining legs apart, that my friend, is codswallop.***
***GRIFF, that’s another word for you.
P.S. It was actually ME who said we should have gone for Dunne or Taylor. So there you go. Even denying what I’m saying, now. (What’s the point, eh?)
20 September 2009 at 10:23 pm #9298No, I have nothing against you, I just don’t agree with what you said. And no I’m not after a spat with you either. And yes, Matt Jackson was poor in his 2 years with us in the prem. He was a good championship defender. Championship defenders don’t cut it in the prem I’m afraid. And yes, Bramble, Boyce and Scharner are all better then Jacko ever was.
Oh sorry, it was you that said that we should have got Taylor, Shame on me. What a fool I am for saying such a stupid thing.
Honestly
20 September 2009 at 11:32 pm #9304“Championship defenders don’t cut it in the prem I’m afraid”
And what exactly is Boyce then?
Jackson played in the top flight before he joined us, as well.
21 September 2009 at 12:04 am #9311Boyce is good! Much better than Jackson anyway, Jacko played in the Prem when he was about 24, when he was fitter and faster. By the time he played in the prem with us, he wasn’t.
21 September 2009 at 12:18 am #9313Boyce is average. Always has been, always will be.
That’s my opinion.
21 September 2009 at 12:19 am #9314ok lets agree to disagree
21 September 2009 at 12:31 am #9317vat69 i dont mind if you disagree with me everybody is entitled to an opinion. I wont start an argument just because you dont think the same as i do.
I was trying to put positive spin on things, but after the Fulham game last year i was thinking the same has i am now that we looked doomed.
Teams worse than us – Hull City, Portsmouth, Blackburn, Bolton, Darlington and Burnley when the bubble burst and they dont look like they will get anything away from home.
21 September 2009 at 12:50 am #9320Difference last season, though, was that we managed to grind some results out, largely due to 4 factors.
Heskey, Palacios, Cattermole, and Valencia.
Hate to play that same old tune……..but it’s right.
Really think we are in serious decline.
21 September 2009 at 4:06 pm #9386Age and declining legs apart, that my friend, is codswallop.******GRIFF, that’s another word for you.
Nah, codswallop doesn’t do it for me, Vat.
You stick to your bailliwick* of eastern european football
* bailliwick – a person’s specific area of knowledge or responsibility. Now THAT’S a word :ugeek:
21 September 2009 at 4:09 pm #9388Rapscallion.
THAT’S a great word.
23 September 2009 at 3:56 pm #9548Shennanegans.
My favourite.

Really think we are in serious decline.
In the first ten games last season even with the likes of Heskey, Palacios, Cattermole and Valencia in the side we didn’t do that well as we only picked up 8 points.
It was only the games between the 11-19th games that we really picked up points and even then 3 penalties won us matches 3 of the matches.
http://www.notapatchon.net/blogs/was-steve-bruce-really-that-good.html
Strip away the four penalties from the first half of last season and Bruce’s record wasn’t that impressive.
So far I don’t see that much difference between this year’s start compared with last year’s. However, we’ve won Villa away and West Ham at home gaining 6 points whereas last season we only gained 1 point from these fixtures.

So to argue we are in ‘serious decline’ is rather premature, particularly at this stage of the season.
