I am surprised that nobody has mentioned Whelan’s untimely step down from chairman! What happened to that so called ‘Dunkirk Spirit’ and all that similar bollocks he has spouted in the past? What happened to the alleged dressing room interventions? I just think that the dire situation the club is in at the moment was not the time to step down, it reeks of rats jumping ship to me! Martinez got slated for jumping ship after the Prem relegation yet not a word on Whelan’s bad timing? I did notice that he went out with a little speech and I have been informed that he made a bit of a fool of himself by trying to silence the away fans! It’s over 40 years since they won the FA Cup Dave, not 25! What better way to gee up the away side for a win than a put down, albeit a pathetic one! Leeds had the last laugh though and we are left with a tyro at the helm of this sinking ship while the ex chairman has made off in the only lifeboat to a nice caribbean island ! X marks the spot ! :)

Nah it was very funny actually.

His moving aside can be likened to how he got out of JJB, with a tidy sum of money as the ship sank.

Knows his onions does Mr Whelan. Good luck David, with your Grandad’s train set.

“Grandad, the train keeps coming off the tracks”

        “That’s because Malky’s driving lad”

          Here’s my take on it.

I think it has bugger all to do with sinking ships etc.

Whelan made a monumental cock-up when he came out and said what he said in defence of Mackay.

Believing he was bullet proof and naively thinking all the journalists who telephoned him directly were his friends, he ignored everyone’s advice and shot his mouth off – but this time it was an ill-conceived comment too far.

He was made to look like a doddering old fool, and nobody is interested anymore in what he has to say about Financial Fair Play, foreign managers, the Ukraine-Russian situation, the plight of the snow leopard or whatever else he used to volunteer his opinions on.

He used Wigan Athletic as a vehicle to get himself in front of the cameras. He never made money from the club, so it was the fame and notoriety that kept him interested.

Now that’s gone, what’s the point?

Nobody wants to buy the club, and Whelan is not going to invest any more of his money, so the best thing to do is to ensure it’s self-sufficient, so he’s not losing money, and give it to his grandson.

To be fair, the Leeds fans were giving Whelan stick before his comment, he then made it & whilst there was some initial booing the majority seemed to take it as a joke & one that had been made coz they’d been giving him stick

As for the timing of his announcement, I don’t think there’s any conspiracies behind it even if the timing does seem odd as, along with the recent transfer departures, it seems to give off the impression of people jumping overboard as the good ship Latics is sinking
In reality though, Whelan has been preparing his grandson for the role for several years now & Whelan has been taking a less active role in the running of the club during that time – I read in the lead up to his ban that the club wouldn’t contest any ban as due to the fact Whelan wasn’t signatory to any transfers & many other key areas that it wouldn’t make a blind bit of difference to the running of the club.
In light of his reducing involvement, the controversy surrounding his appointment of Mackay & his subsequent comments when (as Standish points out) the journalists led him up the garden path & then hung him out to dry when he made the comments that they hoped (& probably knew) that he’d make have just led him to think that now is the time to officially announce he was stepping down.
If I’m honest, the timing does strike me as odd as I’m sure that it could have waited until the summer but if the club does get relegated he’d have only have been accused of jumping ship anyway instead of hanging round & leading a charge back up the leagues

The way Malky was appointed and the subsequent fallout has made him pretty much fireproof as long as Mr Whelan was in charge but now he no longer has that comfort. As for sinking ships, the guy owns the club so how the hell can he just bugger off?. Mr Whelan has a reason for the timing I’m sure of that and he will be doing everything possible to arrest the slide. I’m also sure that when I’m 78 I will not be driving a bloody truck and working my spuds off.Lets see what happens in the coming months.
