Off we go again in 15 minutes.

After the dross served up on Wednesday night, how will we do in Switzerland?

The very fact that Switzerland are seen as our main rivals, or any rival at all, shows how far we have sunk as a football power.

In my adult lifetime, which is a bit less than Griff has been shaving, England peaked in 1990, after being inconsistent in the 1980s.

Then began a long, steady decline, interrupted briefly by Gazza and Co in Euro 96.

The decline continued uninterrupted through the 1990s and 2000s, becoming a slump in the 2010s…

We used to think of England as a world football power. Today we are at best about 10th….

    (In Europe)

    What has gone wrong?

We have the finest national stadium in the world (France aside, who else has one in Europe?).

We have the richest league in the world.

    We invented the game.

We should be a world power to rival Germany, I nearly said Brazil

Where did it all go wrong, and more to the point, how do we put it right?

GL lads tonight, you’ll need it

    A win’s a win as they say…

I didn’t mention before I’ve got tickets for me and the wife to go to the Slovenia game on 15th Nov. The compromise to agree this was we have to go round Covent Garden in the morning and go for lunch somewhere effing expensive nice

You’ll get carted off to the nut house if you carry on talking to yourself. :woohoo:

An much improved performance the first goal was classic counter attack goal

I agree that it was a good counter attacking goal, but I still think it was a below par performance from a below par team.

I know the world cup is behind us but I am still not excited about this England team, and had we been in any other group I would not have expected us to qualify.

Rooney is a mistake as a captain – it looks like it was given to him because he’s been here the longest. He, to me, shows no leadership skills, is not vocal enough and can still ‘lose it’ if it’s not going his way – poor temperament.

When I look back on that game last night, there were far too many mistakes (over/under passing, ball into space with no runners, over excitable kids) and I fear that we are a few years away from being contenders on the European or World stage.

Shows how far the national side have fallen when all the media and supporters are raving about a win in Switzerland FFS!!!
two very poor sides in my view and until more England young players are given opportunities at the highest level then I can see a steady decline and more drab performances.
the group Englans are in should be an absolute shoe in given that the authorities and TV companies need the biggest nations in this tournament to sell it and attract advertising and sponsorship so I hardly think this victory is anything to shout about really .

At one point the other night, 3 out of the 4 defenders were Everton players. The same Everton who let in 6 goals the other week against better opposition.

John Stones got 7 out of 10 in one of the national papers I saw on Tuesday. I was watching him quite closely and he made what seemed like hundreds of back passes and only 2 or 3 forward.

I’m not a great fan of Glen Johnson but he is on another planet to Stones.
