Reet I did say the other week that I judge a manager’s season as a success if they have made progress from the season before & that if Bobby did I would say well done
I’m a man of my words so “Well done Bobby!!!”

Looking at last season against this season, they’ve won the same amount of games, drawn more, lost less, scored more, conceded less, got a better goal difference by almost 50% & 17% more points. That is progress in anybody’s book

To be fair to myself whilst I have always said that I don’t think Bobby is the right man for the job long term (& I still don’t TBH), I have said on numerous occasions that I thought there had been a marked improvement in performances since the end of the January transfer window (with the exception of Sunderland away & the first half yesterday).
I’ve had a look at Latics results since 1st Feb & in the 14 games since then we’ve played most of the teams in the division & come out with 20 points. That’s just under 1.5 a game & if that form was averaged out over the course of a full season would get 54 points.
Make’s Bobby’s “I think we can finish in the top 10 next season” claim look not quite so ludicrous as I thought it did when he made it

    Two other points:
    1) I was glad to see at the end of the game the obvious high esteem in which the players hold Bobby
    2) I’ve never been more pleased to have been proved wrong

Tyldelsey – you’ve hit the nail on the head for me…..

That was one of the most noticeable things for me during the end of match celebrations – which make a bit of a mockery of the old ‘he’s lost the dressing room’ theories we’ve seen on here this season.

Couldn’t have said it better myself Tyldsley – well done to one and all! To add, it was also pleasantly surprising yesterday to see that the (sort of) 4-4-2 formation didn’t work and that 4-5-1 won the game.

Quite a strange feeling though to think that, ultimately, we had a better season than last year, despite spending almost all of it in the bottom 4!!

We never played 4 4 2 Connor played up top with Hugo on the left or at least thats how it looked from the away end at Stoke with my beer goggles on.

I can’t speak for everybody else Edinburgh but I would have thought that my comment “that I judge a manager’s season as a success if they have made progress from the season before” might have given it away!! ;)

TL, I could be very wrong but maybe it is your belief that Martinez is not the right man for the job long-term is what made EL question the expectation of the darkside.

I am wondering, if you had the person you desired as our manager, what would you expect him to achieve in the next 3 years at Wigan?

Seeing that this was posted “especially for jrfatfan”, I suppose I’d better respond.

I have said in an earlier post that I’m not the type to gloat or ask for apologies etc. from any Darkside, following our team staying up and more importantly the passion shown by Martinez, Whelan and all the players at pitch side Sunday towards our beloved team.
It brought a shiver down my spine and a tear to my eye.

However, your post TL whilst being a bit cap in hand, still baffled me when reading these words:-

Be it slow progress, it is progress and to say Martinez is not the right man for the job, is IMHO, being very short-sighted.
I and many others will look for further progress next year and judge the manager, players, chairman etc. on how we do progress. I still get the feeling that with your little comment in brackets, you’ve once again written him off already and its given you that little something of “I told you so” to fall back on if things go paps up next season. [TBH]

              From Matlock to ManU
              What a journey!

i don’t think Bobby will achieve that. Then again I didn’t think he would keep us up in his first season & he proved me wrong. I didn’t think that we’d stay up last season or that the team would progress in the way it I highlighted in my first post & he proved me wrong.
Long may that continue :happy-partydance: :happy-partydance:

I’ve never claimed that anything I say makes any sense jrfatfan!!!! ;) ;)
My original post wasn’t really meant to be anything other than a light hearted well done for proving me wrong Bobby post – especially in light of the thread we were postign on the other week
My comment in brackets was no more meant to be a “I told you so” fall back any more than it was meant to be a “I’m sticking my head above the parapet for the lightside to have a pop at next season if he continues to make progress”
You are spot on in that this season Bobby has progressed the team from the season before – it may be slow but if he gets the same percentage progress next season (points wise) it’ll have Latics pushing for that top half finish.
Do I think he’s capable of getting that progress or indeed any progress on last season (especially in light of the players who are likely to leave)? I’m honest enough to say that I don’t but I’m being more than a little previous as no-one knows who will go & who will arrive – in light of Bobby proving me wrong twice maybe I should have learnt my lesson so I’ll take the following smileys advice :shhh: :shhh:

I would like to point out however that my point the other week about (some) lightsiders being just as bad as (some) darksiders when it comes to “we told you so/where are you all now” posts was proven come Sunday evening/Monday morning!! ;)

So if you put that much stock on the need for a manager to make progress from the season before, why do you think a 37 year old manager who’s record reads 92 points in League One in 2007/8, 68 points in the Championship in 2008/9, 36 points in the Prem in 2009/10 and 42 points in the Prem in 2010/11 is not the right man for Wigan Athletic in the long-term?

Because going off my opinion of his track record of signings & the players who are likely to leave this summer I think its gonna be one hell of a job to keep up that momentum of progress
