Let’s leave the fringe players on the fringe and go for Sunday’s game with guns blazing.Going to be tough whether its Leicester or Huddersfield so I don’t think we’ll get anything other than a negative Monday headline if we play a weakened team.A win , quarter final place can only be good for the players confidence and the fans , club also get a lift. I see no reason to risk getting dumped out by playing the lesser lights as we don’t need another confidence kick in the knackers prior to such an important game at Reading .

I’d like to see a strong side put out as I want Latics to get as far in it as possible but I don’t buy into it being a kick in the confidence knackers if a scratch side gets knocked out.
How would it effect the confidence of Di Santo, Caldwell, McCarthy, McArthur etc.. if a side they have no involvement with gets beat as they’ve had no input in it?

i think though that we’ll see a stronger side than has been out for the previous 2 rounds but purely due to the fact that we have some players coming back from injury who Bobby mentioned last week were looking at this game as comeback targets such as Alcaraz & the Japanese fella. Plus we have other players who need a bit more match practice (Kone & Scharner) I expect a line up not far from:
      1 – Robles
      2 – Stam
      3 – Mustoe
      4 – Scharner
      5 – Alcaraz
      6 – Golobart
      7 – Gomez
      8 – Jones
      9 – Kone
      10 – Miyaichi (??)
      11 – Fyvie

I also think that will be near enough the side TL.kone and Scharner may be benched.

Tough one to call as Bob certainly sticks to his guns and doesn’t wane under criticism. He uses the FA cup to give the fringe players a run out but I reckon he just might have 4/5 first teamers in for this one? Especially if we draw Leicester

          #103202

And how much stick would Bob get if he put out most of the first team in the cup and a few of them got injured? Plenty, I would think.

They could get injured in the next league game ! This wrap em up in cotton wool lark is a big fuckin joke ! Get em played and if they get injured then so be it. The late Les dagger ( Ex Nob Ender ) who’s windows I clean used to say that players don’t know they’re born these days and yes I did get tales of heads split open by the lace etc etc ! He did have a wicked scrap book though from when he played with the likes of Tom Finney, Tommy Thompson, Willie Cunningham and Tommy Docherty :)

I don’t necessarily disagree with you, but that wasn’t my question. If he plays the first team and, say, three of them get injured and miss the “must win” Reading game, how much stick would he get?

, we get three first rstvetamers injured and out[/quote]

I for one would be cool with it and put it down to kismet. If we progress to the quarter finals of the FA Cup then the injured players would have given their all for the cause, its all hands on deck now and sacrifices will have to be made as everybody pulls together and gives every ounce of grit and determination that they have within them ! I nearly morphed into Mel Gibson then !! :cheer:

He would get NO stick from me as that would not be his fault. Very unlikely that will happen, but people do seem to use that as an excuse nowadays.

My comments were based around Bobs team selections for Forrest and West Ham (better teams than Macc etc) as he had a more even mix of first teamers and reserves / youngsters. That worked well and will be needed if we draw Leicester

I have been one in the past at this stage of a cup comp to be very critical of RM tactics and resting players or giving the fringe players an opportunity.Arsenal away Tuesday night still sticks in my mind (get over it).however IMO I would like to see a rested, fresh and the strongest latics side possible on the field against Reading and give it to them and maybe 3 much needed points. Beating one of these sides on Sunday will not create to much of a winning mentality for the premiership game IMO.Fresh and rested team with no injuries ,I would rather give the premiership run in a bloody good go rather than a cup run.Who knows our fringe players may rise to the occasion and win anyway. n :cheer:

We can play a 50/50 side similar to the one we played at Forest and West Ham and have a good crack at it.

Rested and fresh for the Reading game… That game is a full week after the FA cup tie Eastander. That might have some credence if we had a heavy fixture list and weren’t already losing week in week out.
