Just watched Sky Sports News and Tony Gale has us tipped as one of his shock results which really winds me up. Being a Premiership team with a squad on good money with superior quality we should beat Swindon easy. I know shocks happen but are recent form in cup competitions is an absolute disgrace. I would play the first team and make sure we win and also a good win would boost confidence for the rest of the season.
Come on Wigan goodpost goodpost goodpost
6 January 2012 at 1:15 pm #77048id be a bit more shocked if we won to be honest.
and before anyone asks, there arent any decent pubs in Swindon (new town)
6 January 2012 at 1:20 pm #77049I’m really hoping the club take this game seriously, we could do with a good cup run, you never know with a bit of luck on our side we could all be looking at a nice day out in May. One can but dream.
6 January 2012 at 2:26 pm #77053I can pretty well guarantee we will not play the “first team” – whatever that is.
When we met with Bob a month or two back he was asked about a Cup run and answered (according to my scribbled notes) that we will “take it as seriously as we can”. Bob will use the squad (players like Callum McManaman in particular) to give players playing time. He sees using the whole squad is a must to keep them match fit.
No manager goes out to lose any game – despite Blackburn’s pathetic attempt that they wanted to go out of the League Cup. I remember once casually saying to Paul Jewell, in the season we were flying high for promotion, before an LDV Vans game against Doncaster something on the lines that the result didn’t really matter. He nearly bit my head off.
The thing was we lost that game (with a reserve team) and people said that he didn’t care. Trust me – he did, and I suspect Bob will be the same. He will want to win, but he will also be wanting to give players opportunities to show what they can do.
6 January 2012 at 5:35 pm #77061If the “reserve” team cant put up a decent match against the likes of Swindon then they shouldnt be in the squad.
6 January 2012 at 6:03 pm #77066If the “reserve” team cant put up a decent match against the likes of Swindon then they shouldnt be in the squad.Precisely. They are members of a Premier League squad (the “reserves” are actually the “Development Squad”, mainly youngsters).
This is their chance to really show what they can do.

If it’s anything like the “development squad” performance i saw last month against Liverpool then I won’t be holding my breath
6 January 2012 at 8:01 pm #77071I think it is fair to say Martinez isnt bothered one bit about the F.A Cup, I know it isn’t just him that does it but this competition used to be the best thing in the season to wait for. Every club at full strength when genuine shocks occured. I don’t wan’t to take any gloss off Swindon if they win because fair play they would have still beaten a premiership team and it’s a big day for them if they do, Regardless of what league they expect us to be in. If you look around the boards we don’t deserve to be in the Premier League, We have been bankrolled and we should be in league 2 where our attendances would suit, However if they win tomorrow we will be a Premiership side and they have a giant killing. Back on topic, As we know, Martinez’ record in the F.A Cup with us is worse than dismal but i think he was in charge at Swansea the season befe he joined us when they were thumped 4-2 by Havant & Waterlooville.
He might not care, But for the fans it is a major embarrassment. We deserve a good cup run at least if he is resigned to relegation battles every year. We could beat them 5-0 tomorrow if we wanted to but he would rather us not to for some reason.
6 January 2012 at 8:19 pm #77072Sorry, Yosser, but if you read my post I said I think he does care – as does any manager. No manager wants to lose any game.
He sees it as an opportunity to give match time to fringe players, but he will be doing that in the belief that they can win.
As was said above – if he plays those players knowing that they will not be good enough to beat a team 2 divisions below us then why are we continuing to play their wages?
6 January 2012 at 8:29 pm #77075The same could have been said of Koumas, De Ridder, Kapo, Scotland, Amaya, Won Chee Hoo-ever he is and Bouaouzan but with the exception of Amaya and Scotland who were sold all the others contracts just ran down despite never getting a sniff, But they did in the cups. So he has done it before.
The current squad now, Kirkland, Lopez, Thomas, McArthur, and countless other current regular first teamers are no good either but i bet the bad ones will all play. Not sure of Glass Back’s injury situation but i can guarantee the other 3 will start. Bad players and bad Martinez signings. Bruce got the ball rolling with Thomas but Martinez could have stopped that deal when he arrived, And should have as he is the worst midfielder i have ever seen in any league.

No he’s not.
6 January 2012 at 9:22 pm #77081He isnt the worst that i have seen?
But he is, Otherwise i would not have said it. What other midfielder can’t pass, tackle or shoot and is on thousands a week.
6 January 2012 at 9:32 pm #77085Within living memory on this very site people were saying that about Jordi Gomez
6 January 2012 at 9:36 pm #77086Just watched Sky Sports News and Tony Gale has us tipped as one of his shock resultsA shock result in that we’ll win?
