Absolutely marrer it has never ever been anything but a football mad town.Nobody counts those who glory hunt and follow the big 4 neighbours or the hundreds of lads who play every Saturday. It is simply based on the numbers at the Latics. There are possibly more Utd and Liverpool fans in this town than those who follow the jokes. But why let facts matter when you have lazy journalism.

Could we possibly do the double?
This superb club is full of surprises what’s the odds from the bookies tonight?

Winning it from league 1 and looking at the sides left in it, semi finalists would be spurs chelsea and united probably, would have to be the best cup win in history. Yes I would love that to happen but if I am honest I would swap Monday for a win Saturday.

The cup run has been superb but it’s a bonus and nothing more. We have to be playing Championship football next season.

I’d love a semi final with leicester, swansea & ourselves in it. I think that would be good for football like that time when pompey played cardiff in the final. I also wouldn’t mind a semi final draw against rochdale, but that one might be asking for too much.

…. if I am honest I would swap Monday for a win Saturday.

        Really….?

I’ve been following this club for over fifty years and that game on Monday night is right up there with the best, most memorable I’ve ever witnessed. They seldom come around but when they do they are priceless, unforgettable and irreplaceable. To say you would swap the euphoria and that fantastic experience on Monday night for a win on Saturday – which represents neither a crucial nor defining moment in the season – is just plain wrong, just as sacrificing the FA Cup win for Premier League status would have been in 2013.

Even if we do miss out on promotion as a consequence of this cup run I for one would not change a thing and certainly not for our moment of glory on Monday night.

          Yeah Sammy. 100%.

In 2013 until the Huddersfield game I wasn’t that bothered about the cup but then we started to set club records and go further than we ever had in my lifetime. Granted I went to every game but I would rather have stayed up at that stage because financially we needed to. Once we got past Huddersfield things did change although I never expected us to beat Everton. I definitely wouldn’t swap winning the cup for staying up now.

Monday night was probably a better win than the cup final for the achievement of beating this City side, but winning the cup is going to do us no favours at all this season and let’s be honest and take the glasses off….we’re not going to.

We need to get out of this league and if this cup run prevents us from doing that then it’s a distraction that could set us back years. I won’t forget Monday night for as long as I live but promotion is and has to remain our goal.

I did say to friends after the game by text that promotion is our goal and wins like that are a bonus. Luckily when you’re as good as us though you can have both. ;)

Totally agree with that. What we achieved on Monday night was something so big that we couldn’t possibly ever top. Or could we? It was without a doubt our greatest ever win. The difference in finances, squad size, league position and the colossal form of Citeh this season and the reputation they came with is a million miles wide. This for me tops anything I have witnessed in all the years including beating Doncaster Rovers with Harry Lyons hat trick, The win at Oldham to take us to Wembley the first time, The day we were elected to the league, The three previous giant killings of City, The Premier League promotion day and the semi final victory over Arsenal in the league cup. What we achieved was witnessed by billions again around the planet and I was there and so proud. Our club is amazing. How can we top this? Sneaky feeling we will one day. Maybe a European trophy. After all we are Wigan Athletic the greatest little club in the world.

I would say it was the biggest win in my lifetime certainly but it won’t pay the bills.

We need to be playing Championship football next season especially with some of the clubs in and around the bottom 3 in that league. Not going up this season could mean we stay in this league for a couple of years and we can’t afford to do that.

I know exactly where you’re coming from Egg but I think we will be promoted and reach Wembley in the semi-final too.

No matter what happens we are on the map, even if we don’t win the cup or fail to get promoted, I am still proud to say “I am from Wigan.”

We’ll never know, but winning the FA Cup could have been the very thing that made the difference when attracting new owners. When there’s 8k on at the DW in League One it may not feel that way, but to have any chance of attracting the kind of investment needed to push on, we needed a story and history that differentiated us from so many identikit clubs. Without said investment, there’s little chance we could progress much beyond being one of those clubs who yoyo between the Championship and League One.

That may still be our destiny with the new owners, in which case nights like Monday should be treasured even more. Few clubs have experienced anything like our story.

Your words iterate my comment “We are on the map”

I would say proudly that nobody has ever matched our story. From non league to Europe, league cup final and what is sometimes missed is that we actually went 2 seasons without losing an F A cup game. Losing on penalties in the semi is hardly being beat and as a championship club. Obviously the massive clubs are successful and win more but non of them have done it from where we started from. The biggest little club in the world is simply the greatest story ever told.

                      Proud as can be.
