Out for the rest of season

      Who will replace Figueroa?

Martinez could play three at the back with Boyce, Scharner and Caldwell – or perhaps Golobart when he returns. Stam could come in at Right Wing Back.

Or he could play two full backs, as he did yesterday. He ended with Stam and Beausejour – with Boyce and Scharner in the centre. Boyce is the most natural right back, but we seem short of options at left back. Perhaps Lopez could come in.

I don’t see Beausejour as a left back, and I’m not sure that Stam and McManaman would make a good pair on the right, though they both turned in good performances yesterday. But our choices are limited.

Figueroa was not missed when he went off on Saturday and won’t be missed for the test of the season.
One of the reasons we are in the position we are this season is because of Figueroa, and his poor defensive play, you only need to look at how many goals have come from the opposition coming in behind him at the far post, him and Caldwell between them are a major factor in our goals against column.

Figueroa and Caldwell both played their part in the Great Escape last season. If you think Figueroa and Caldwell are equally bad, then you won’t expect any improvement if Caldwell comes in for Figueroa.

The defence has certainly been poor this season, but I would say that injuries have been the main cause of that. Figueroa, to his credit, has appeared in most games.

Martinez has converted Figueroa from a full-back into a centre-half/back three player. Who is going to replace him in the team? Will Wigan have to change their style too?

Wigan ended with a makeshift defence on Saturday, with a back four of Stam, Boyce, Scharner and Beausejour. What alternative is there?
