Get out the Orange ball!
No, I know most snow will be cleared, but I’d still like there to be some remaining. It always used to be an interesting speactacle when you had snow on the pitch, and using an Orange ball. Do you remember when they used to bring out the Orange Adidas Tango? Class. How retro.
Curiously enough, I can recall an absolutely pulsating encounter between todays opponents Spurs, and Sheff Wed, at Hillsborough in about 1988, played on snow. Was live on TV, ‘The Big Match’, a Sunday afternoon.Really looking forward to the game. I think if the match had been tomorrow, it would have been off, with ice problems. But as it is, the snow is fresh. Game on!

21 February 2010 at 2:19 pm #23387I remember that game at Springfield against Swindon when it got called off, about 70 minutes into it I think, I hope that doesn’t happen today.

Thought that was Bounemouth mucker could be wrong though
21 February 2010 at 2:30 pm #23390Yeah, Bournemouth it was. 1987.
We were a goal up, through Paul Jewell, before referee George Courtney, from Spennymoor, abandoned the game. I recall it was proper, proper snow on the pitch that day. No green to be seen…..and the ball used was an Orange Adidas tango, I think!
Replayed game finished 1-1, I think.
“Statto!!! Statto!!!”
21 February 2010 at 2:31 pm #23391Was only a kid, I knew they played in red !

Was the one were it only seemed to drizzle for about 10mins on the morning of the game ? Yet the ref reckoned the pitch was waterlogged ?
I remember walking up Second Ave and a steward telling me and a mate that the game was off.

Recall a few times, walking up Douglas Bank Drive, only to be met with people walking back down saying “It’s off”. If it froze, the shadow of the Phoenix Stand kept it solid. And if it rained bad, that corner near the Shevington end used to be waterlogged. It was a debate sometimes as to whether they’d wanted the game on.

21 February 2010 at 2:59 pm #23400Thinking on, Harry Redknapp was the Bournemouth manager, in 1987.
As for George Courtney, unbelievably he’s 68 now! Still works as a Fifa ‘Delegate’, who basically reports on stadium conditions, etc.
Never minded him as a referee. He was ion charge that night at Bolton when Bobby Campbell got a hat-trick, the first being a ‘Geoff Hurst’ style goal.21 February 2010 at 3:03 pm #23401Any of you owd uns remember playing Gateshead in the mid 70s when the game was called off in the second half due to a blizzard.
Think we were 2-0 up at the time.

21 February 2010 at 3:48 pm #23411More recent times 2 trips to Crewe have been called of around a hour before kick off. I remember going to the one the day after Boxing day been on a 3 day bender :D and got the 10 o’clock train. When we got to the ground to get it confirmed that the match was off the stewards wouldnt even let us in there supporters club for a pint. :(
