Do u honestly believe that the latics have more support in wigan than the rugby? If you do you are deluded. Perhaps more loyal fans yes but that’s it! The rugby will always be a bigger pull to the majority of the town when in a final!
11 October 2016 at 12:08 am #151349Whichever way you look at it more people watch football in Wigan than watch Rugby.
The football clubs average gate may be slightly lower at the moment, but they do play a lot more games over a season, so if you add up the gates at the football and times it by the amount of matches they play, the amount over a season will be more for the football club than the rugby club.
If the Wiganers who go to watch Utd, City, Liverpool and Everton etc every week are also counted then Wigan is catagorically a Football town.
The Latics probably attract fans from a 10 mile vacinity, whereas the rugby club attract fans from the whole of the NW and beyond.
Lets face it, if you like rugby, who else are you going to watch if you come from Lancashire, Gt Manchester, Merseyside, Fylde and Cumbria etc.
Fans are not spoilt for choice as the competion for attracting fans is just not there in RL.11 October 2016 at 12:44 am #151352Well it wasn’t in 2006 was it?And what’s that game got to do with the 2014 FA Cup semi final?
But if we must…there was still 2068 more on in 2006 than in the Super 8s semi final of 2016.
Fuck the EFL

Well it was a semi final (our first ever) at home against Arsenal. What makes you think 13000 extra people would turn up?
What was the last BIG cup crowd at The JJB/DW?? People (well wiganers) won’t buy a ticket to a ground they have a season ticket at. Doesn’t happen.
Horc is spot on, there are far more football fans in Wigan they just don’t support Latics.
11 October 2016 at 2:39 am #151356Eggy plenty to say on this subject but deliberately swerving the issue on the paltry turn out in the Super 8s semi final played at DW stadium 10,013 wasnt it and how many of those came down from Hull?
Do you reckon rugby fans born and bred in Wigan follow other RL clubs?
Fuck the EFL
11 October 2016 at 10:03 am #151357I didn’t swerve it at all. Paragraph 2.
Hull brought about 1500.
I know a few who support other clubs yes.
11 October 2016 at 2:13 pm #151359I’ll take your word on the last two Eggy.
Even so, its a well known fact that born and bred Wigan football fans support other football clubs (well they watch em on TV and wear the shirts)
But for the life of me i can’t think of any born and bred Wiganers that support other rugby league teams, why would they when they can follow a big fish in a small pond?
Actually i know a bloke (a real rugby league fan and Worriers supporter) that goes to watch lower league sides play on Sunday’s around the North West he doesn’t support them he just loves to watch RL.
Fuck the EFL

The same reason some would follow other football clubs. Parents influence. If a guy moves from St Helens/Warrington to Wigan will he bring his son up as a Wigan fan? No he won’t.
Plus, there are plenty of Latics fans who love rugby they just won’t support Wigan.
Who actually cares? Our Chairman doesn’t as per his Twitter.
Congratulations to @WiganWarriorsRL! We are from a small town amongst big cities & we should be proud of all the success our teams achieve.

I was born and bred in Wigan. I support St Helens because my Dad is from St Helens.
