4-2-4, 4-5-1, 4-3-2-1, etc. I would love to see the opponent’s managers face if a team lined up 2-3-5 like in the good old days B)

Going back to my Wigan Ammy days and playing for Aspull, the manager at the time Len Sharp, had this surprise tactic at the first corner.

No matter what time in the game it arrived, we would all pile into the box apart from the corner taker and keeper.

We would huddle around the edge of the 6 yard box and it would look like pandemonium. The success rate of getting a goal was remarkable even when teams sussed it.

It would be great if the pro managers had some sort of “totally against the training manual” sort of tactic that meant taking a chance.

Say for instance its your turn to KO, every player apart from the person kicking off and the goalie, lined up on the half way line at one side of the field taking up a 100m sprint blocks type of position . As soon as the whistle is blown they all set off sprinting into their opponents half and the ball is immediately punted long and high towards the on running players.

You would have to make sure the ball wasn’t charged down though in the centre circle.

          From Matlock to ManU
          What a journey!

That’s not too far away from what Jewell used to do with kick-offs when McCulloch was here, to be fair.

That was plan B. Plan A was aim at Roberts. (Plan C incidentally was aim at McCulloch who headed it infield to Roberts)

Doesn’t martinez already have one of these “surprise tacticts” already in place ?

It’s the ‘lets make the opposition think we don’t want to score plan’.

Dont you think the game has been ruined with all these continental style formations? Whats wrong with having fullbacks whose job is to defend as a unit with the centre backs not flying down the channels on the overlap.Wingers who hug the touchline beat his man reach the corners and put in a blinding cross not covering his fullbacks arse and back tracking.Forwards who can head the ball and who actually get into the oppositions penalty area and score.Centre half,s who frighten the living sh!te out of you and who can head it farther than I can kick it.Midfielders who can tackle hard without using 2 feet and win the ball fairly.Like it used to be aahhh if only.

Unfortunately I’m old enough to have watched mainly First Division Football from the 1950’s. When players played two games in two days over Christmas and Easter never mind a week. Pitches were, compared to today’s pitches, abysmal, The ball weighed probably 3 times as heavy as todays balls when wet, Players weren’t coached as much, and probably not as fit as today’s players. But the game was a lot more exciting. I was at Goodison Park in 1958 when they played Burnley 78,000 people. Now that was an atmosphere…. Great Teams. Great Players. Great Times. :)
