Read on other posts the debate on formations and Martinez refusal to play anything else but 4-5-1. We may well be no better off playing 4-4-2 but we will never know.
However these are the blinding facts about a formation and style which is supposed to produce attractive entertaining football.
4-5-1 has produced 27 goals (Lowest scorers in the division)
Failed to score in 11 of the 29 games.
Bottom of the league 4 points from safety.
FACTS !!!
Talksport were praising teams at the bottom for having a go at the big boys playing 2 up front.
Do you not think it’s a bit too late to be banging on about formations we have heard it all before martinez will not change. MARTINEZ OUT :angry-argument:
the 27 points Wigan Athletic have after 28 games is the highest tally for a club at the bottom of the League at this stage since Oldham in 1992/93
Latics scored more goals last season than they did in either season that Steve Bruce managed us in the Premier League and our goals per game average means we’re likely to do so again this year.
bobbys tactics dont work though obviously
we dont only play 4-5-1 (4-2-3-1) at all weve seen that one 4-4-2, 5-3-2 and probably a couple more aswell. the last one as recent as man city in the second half when sammon came on.
@ lowey : I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for us to start with two forwards, as Bobby doesn’t believe in it. He’ll revert to his favoured 4-5-1 with a lone, isolated striker. The best we can hope for is Sammon as the striker, as he looks more capable of holding the ball up than any of the others. It always used to be the case that strikers worked in pairs, feeding off each other and Sammon and Rodallega could do that.

Fair point Old_Wolf, however, I really wouldn’t like to see our only striker in a 4-5-1 formation being the one to ‘hold the ball up’. That’s a traditional lumping Centre forward role (one Heskey did very well for us) but in this modern game wouldn’t get many goals. Now to play him ‘paired’ with a pacy striker – holding the ball, laying off, knocking defenders out of the way and gaining plenty of ‘assists’……then yes it could add a different perspective to our attacking options.

Can you tell me when we started a game or even changed formation with anything left than 10 mins left? It is 4-5-1 no matter how Martinez or his supporters try to cover it up. This was shown numerous times on Sat as Hugo was the only player in their half for most of the 1st half with the nearest player 30-40 yards away
In my defence I put talksport on by mistake ….. er honest.
Had to laugh at this weeks observer. Sammon says he looking forward to forming a formation with Hugo. Like thats going to happen mate – get used to the lonely world of being a wigan striker.

It’s fair to say that Boselli, Di Santo & Scotland were all given good game time. I think Sammon could possibly play as Di Santo, Scotland & Boselli did …. up-front on his own :shifty:
4-4-2 surely. i just dont get why he sticks with it, especially with hugo on the left, that really doesnt work. Why not go with hugo and di santo up front or sammon ?
