Wonder if the Rugby lot will believe it now. It isn’t your fooking Stadium.
Two blokes sold their ground from under them, so we offered to let them play with us at our stadium.
3 minutes 14 to 3 minutes 30…. very interesting
24 November 2016 at 9:31 pm #152626Has there ever been any doubt?
24 November 2016 at 9:41 pm #152628No, not to everyone outside of the Wigan Warriors fanbase.
But within their fanbase there are plenty that argue til the cows come home that the stadium couldn’t have been built without them coming in. Some even think it was built for them and we jumped in, well in future there is no doubt.
St Helens will be loving it on their forum I guess.

That part could actually be true as the grants given to build it were on the basis of it being a dual sports stadium. Originally it was meant to be Orrell but I think DW realistically knew he needed Wigan RL.
Of course, since we made the Prem they have become kind of insignificant and the stadium leases were changed to give the owners of WAFC the ownership of the ground.

That would be believable if the stadium hadn’t already been given the go ahead and the build already started after Whelan dropped his interest in orrell. he instead offered it to warriors knowing the funding would be given if they accepted, he would have footed it had they rejected it. Or at least that is how I lived it :woohoo: I remember the plans with all blue seats in it on that rickety bus outside the building site..

I remember the designs as well and yes they were blue but I’m not sure on the build part. I’m not sure either that DW would have paid the full amount himself but who knows. Once he bought Wigan it was irrelevant as the grants came in.
The fact is though that the rugby have never once had any form of controlling stake in the ground and probably never will.
